HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1944) esembles some of Universal's most famous monsters at one time on the big screen. The FRANKENSTEIN monster, DRACULA, THE WOLFMAN, THE MAD DOCTOR and THE HUNCHBACK are all here together. It is also a sequel to FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN. The film stars BORIS KARLOFF, LON CHANEY, JOHN CARRADINE, ANNE GWYNNE, LIONEL ATWILL, GEORGE ZUCCO, ELANA VERDUGO, PETER COE, GLENN STRANGE, and J. CARROL NAISH. KARLOFF plays Dr. Gustav Niemann, a recently escaped prisoner along with Daniel (J. CARROL NAISH as the hunchback) who are up to no good when they meet up with a traveling horror show. Niemann's main objective is to locate Dr. Frankenstein's notes so he can begin experimenting with dead bodies once again and to take revenge upon those who imprisoned him. The film boasts two of the most beautiful women to appear in horror films. They are ANNE GWYNNE and ELANA VERDUGO. A love story towards the middle of the film is allowed to develope between Larry Talbot (LON CHANEY) and Ilonka (VERDUGO). With this development a love triangle also developes with Daniel becoming increasingly jealous of Talbot as Ilonka's affections switch away from him and towards Talbot. FRANKENSTEIN played by GLENN STRANGE for the first time has little to do until the end of the film. Frankenstein kills Daniel by throwing him out of the castle window, and while trying to escape angry villagers, carries KARLOFF to his death when he enters quick sand. I didn't even mention what happens to Dracula. You will have to watch the film to find out. There is a lot going on in this film and the adventures continued with the release of HOUSE OF DRACULA the following year. If your a fan of Universal horror films, then you will not want to miss out on seeing this film. They just don't make them like this anymore.Read full review
