About this product

Product Information

Ernst Heinrich Haeckel (1834-1919) was renowned as one of the foremost early exponents of Darwinism. His work was credited with having caused the acceptance of Darwinism in Europe, and his popular studies preaching the continuity of all life, organic and inorganic, from prehistoric time to the present converted tens of thousands of readers all over the world. Today, although no one is greatly interested in Haeckel the biologist-philosopher, his work is increasingly prized for something he himself would probably have considered secondary. These are the remarkable plates with which his work was illustrated, particularly his famous Kunstformen. The Kunstformen contains 100 beautiful lithographic plates which show a multitude of unusual life forms: Radiolaria, Foraminifera, and other forms of microscopic life; jellyfishes, starfishes, calcareous sponges, star corals, barnacles, and other sea life; mosses, lichens, red algae, ferns, fungi, orchids, and other plants; and turtles, moths, spiders, bats, frogs, lizards, hummingbirds, and antelope. With many drawings on each plate, each carefully drawn from nature, the subtle details of nature's art forms are easily compared and appreciated. In addition to being marvelous renderings, these plates have long been noted for the peculiar emotional appeal that they have for most viewers, a premonition of surrealism with exotic organic life forms stretching back to their roots in the inorganic, and individual details drawn with awareness of subtle evolutionary changes and millennia-long developments. Artists, illustrators, and others will find them still powerful as one of the landmarks of applied art.

  • A good tool for young students.

I now have three books by Haeckel. I teach first grade and my students LOVE them. They almost fight over them. I wish that I had realized that this one was all in black and white. Because of that, tends to be the one least checked out from my desk (That's where I keep my "personal library." These books have been perfect as we have been studying a unit on tide pools and many of Haekel's drawings are of plankton, echinoderms, etc. We have also been studying symmetry in math. The students love to trace over the designs on tracing paper during their free time. It is a great exploration of complex shapes and is a great exercise for their fine motor and penmanship skills. That said, had I known that this book was not it color, I probably would have just stayed with the other two.

  • Great Book!

This book is the best book you will ever read; it has almost no text and is entirely composed of drawings made of sea life, organisms, plants and creatures of nature. It is a great inspiration for ideas for designs of drawings or other art related projects, and one of the only books like this. It is highly recommended for artists, art students, naturalists and anyone who enjoys the beauty and nature. As an art professor, I was constantly recommending this book to my students, lending it out on occasion, and finally replacing my copy of it even after I retired.

  • Art Forms in Nature

I was blown away that the most intricate of nature's fragile beauties was able to have been so simplisticly and clearly. Such bold art that draws you into the delicatness and strength. You can almost see his drawings struggling to surge through the 2D prison of pen and paper into the depth and life of 3D imaging...yet, not quite able to obtain the image jumping off the page. I am jealous of the tints and tones of his pen that gives the images so much life and almost makes you feel like you were there when he drew it. cool stuff.

  • Great book of illustrations

While it feels a bit cheap to hold due to it's magazine-like covers it has great quality illustrations inside. A must have for designers.

  • Cool book, but better quality paper would have made it a great book.

Pros: beautiful, thought provoking nature plates in book form. Cons: Thin, not high quality paper...but decent value for $10.00. Also, these are just black and white prints, no color at all except the cover.
