  • Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 G Lens - a great lens for stand out portraits

I am not a professional photographer, but I have been taking photographs with SLR cameras since 1970. I bought the Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 G lens because I want to take portraits of my family and especially my grandchildren as well as close ups and have the subject really stand out of the photo, the technical term for this effect is “Bokeh”. When we normally look at things, the object that we are looking at is in focus and stands out, and things behind it are not, however we don’t usually notice this because as our eyes move about the scene they are constantly refocusing giving us the illusion that everything is in focus. In Pre-digital photography many good cameras came with a prime lens and it usually had an aperture of F1.8, making it relatively easy to take a close up or portrait with a ...

  • Great Lens

I have a nikon D5500 camera, I knew beforehand that it would only work as a 50mm manual lens. Here two photo's to show you how good the images are.

  • Beautiful bokeh

Sharp, great bokeh wide open, quick to focus, and at a great price compared to the AF-S. If you have a Nikon body with internal AF motor, this lens is a must have.

  • perfect for your average dinner party

I am a DSLR beginner/hobbyist who wanted to start expanding my lens collections beyond the kit lenses. This lens can be used for a wide variety of situations, but I think it is summarized best with a dinner party. It can be used in dim/low-light (for example, a nice restaurant with ambient lighting) without need for a flash. The larger aperture is definitely the biggest benefit to me. Even though the lens may seem useful only for macro (close up) shots, like food, it's also great for portraits of people sitting around the table and having a good time. This lens is compact and lightweight, which makes it very portable and convenient. Please be careful to note that, while it is compatible with many Nikon bodies, the autofocus function may not work with some.
