I am from Wales....we may produce a few fine singers but or bands, or good bands are rather scarce...that is not to say we are without them...The Clash and Manic Street Preachers to name but a few! In 1997 we were treated to a new band and new sound from Wales with the launch of this debut album - Word Gets Around - from local act - the Stereophonics! Prior to the album launch they had scored a smash with track - Local Boy in the Photograph, and were a hit on the tour scene...including a stint at the renowned Reading Festival ( I got to see them perform live and they were great - though could not match Metallica who performed the same bill...way hey!!). This album falls lovely into both Britpop and Britrock with 12 catchy tunes! It begins with the rather upbeat Thousand trees - a rather pop number with a memorable verse! Look Like Chaplin gets a little heavier on the guitar rifts ad I simply love the simplicity and smart lyrics on More Life in a Tramps Vest which highlights singer Kelly Jones' gravelly voice...and again is rather pop orientated! Traffic slows it down - and it works well - whereas local boy in the Photograph is the hit of the album!! Plough through this album adn you will find it full of songs that are pop in nature with the guitar emphasis giving it a bit of a rock edge! Finally a great band to come out of Wales in the late nineties and though the debut...for me, this is the standout album from the band!Read full review
