Great no-fuss film scanner. Make sure you have the plastic film holders!

Note: If you're using this for film (I am) you need the film holders that shipped with it originally. I 3D printed some but I think you can find them pretty easily online. It seems to be the same part as the V600. A nice little scanner that can do either documents or camera film. The software impressed me, there's no bloat and even though this scanner came out in 2007 there's a version for Windows 11 and MacOS 10.15. I use it on an older version of MacOS and the only issue is I have to jiggle the mouse between frames or it stops scanning. Weird, but not a dealbreaker. It's not particularly fast, but it's not too slow either. At a decent resolution and using digital ICE (which doubles scan times) it took about 15 minutes to scan around 8 frames. It automatically crops images, and though I haven't found out how to turn this off, I'm pretty happy with the job it does. Colors don't come out particularly vivid, but images 'straight out of the camera' usually need to be edited anyway. I'm uploading a shot professionally edited and scanned by a film lab, and my own edited shot scanned on this scanner. I could have done a better job removing dust, but otherwise they are very similar.

Bad scan becauseof dust under glass

Unit was very easy to setup, initial scans were good until I scanned a larger picture which contained blue dots. After further ivestigation I notice dust am Flint under the glass. To save time I disassembled and cleaned the unit myself. Not happy!

  • The Epson V500 Scanner is one of my proud buys as is the Samsung C1810W Color printer!

This is my second purchase of a Epson V500 Scanner. The first was over 5 years ago and it's running just find. I bought this unit for a friend to replace an all in one cheap Epson Printer that just died after 1 year. To replace the printer side of my friends needs I purchase a used Samsung C1810W Color Cartridge Printer. I shall both the Samsung Color Printer & the Epson V500 to replace that failed Epson Printer. I currently have a Samsung C1810W printer of my own & it has performed extremely well over the last 7 years. I purchased this same printer for my son and he's had the same great level of satisfaction.

  • coins & 3d objects

I use this scanner to make enlargements of collectible coins and even thicker items, with good results, comparable to photography but much easier to do. The top hinge is "jawed" so it will accept even a football, and the cover will still close (somewhat). Multiple small items can be shot at once, then cut apart and combined (fronts & backs), annotated, named, and filed. Use a transparency or page protector over the scanner glass to protect it from scratches; this does not seem to affect the quality of the image, even highly enlarged. Color streaking. This happens after a while. Remove the screws holding the glass plate component, and clean the white strip on the underside. Use glass cleaner on the inside of the plate. no need to replace the screws as it opens and functions quite well without them.

  • Deals great with neon colors

While this model is pretty old, the colors are really vivid and true to life (I need to regularly scan some paintings done with neon colors, which a built-in scanner of a multifunction printer+scanner device doesn't like at all). It doesn't support newer versions of Epson Scan software (limited to version 1, so it could be a problem for Mac users), but Vuescan exists as a great alternative.

  • Can't beat an Epson v500 photo scanner

This is a great scanner. I've had 2 identical in the past. The color resolution is good. I don't think the LED light is as bright as a brand new scanner, but it certainly serves my purpose.

  • Limited negative scan area

Epson scanners are great! This V500 is my first negative scanner. It got the job done after I bought the needed negative frame trays. I was disappointed that I needed them in the first place, but also the limited negative scan space. I was only able to scan one 120 neg at a time. I did over a hundred scans, so it was some serious time.

  • Can't beat Epson

It's been a while since a have had a scanner capable of scanning slides and film. This thing is awesome. I purchased a software package called VueScan. It is superior to Epson Scan but both packages get the job done very well. I love this thing.

  • Quality and resolution of the Newer Models

I decided on this scanner because it has the optics of the newer more costly models. I intend to scan transparencies and color negatives. Newer models can gang scan but I don't need that. I need highest quality for a budget price. I had to purchase the film holders separately because they were not included but I intend to use them for pre-scanning color negatives only. I intend to create final scans with the wet method. This scanner is perfect for that.

  • Epson v500

This has to be one of the best scanners on the market that will give you great scan's of any photo, negative or slide. I've owned and used other scanners in the past but this Epson has put all of them to shame. If this unit was to break down tomorrow I would definitely go out and get another one.
