This is a pretty good entry level DV camcorder. It was one of the cheapest I could find that supported DV tapes. There were loads of similar priced ones out there that use either a flash card, DVD or HD. The main reason was that DV tapes are cheap and last quite long. They're easy to change and hold lots of data too. Most of the professional video cameras use DV tapes as standard but they're in excess of £1500! Brand new this camcorder retails for about £200. I had one of these cameras before, but it was stolen and so I sought to replace it. Was lucky to have found it on eBay! Everything works well, I can control the camera from Sony Vegas, to copy and extract all the clips. A 60 minute tape (in SP) sets me back about 13 gigs of raw footage, and the software splits it into individual scenes every time you pressed the record button. On the camcorder there are settings to increase the sound quality to 16 bit and make the screen wider. It's light, has an excellent op-zoom (40x) and also can be used in the dark using the night shot. There's also a bigger battery available that lasts almost forever. The camera is really easy to use and can easily be handled by young children. I wish the held it steady though. I am going to get a tripod sooner or later though. What else can I say, it does the job well!Read full review
It's a gem in low-end price class camcorders. Really, for that amount of money you just hit a bullseye!!! Excellent camcorder, small and easy to use. For me, every button is right on place and it lie perfect in my hand. Big advantage is the Easy button, which gives you the opportunity to shoot nice quality videos, without being expert in videofilming (exposure, white balance, shutter speed and etc.) It focuses very fast, has a huge optical zoom and it is with Carl Zeiss lens... what more to say! As disadvantage I can point that in low light conditions, the picture is becoming noisy, but it still focuses very well. The touchscreen is advantage as it is disadvantage - you just have to used to it and have to wipe it often. Also, this camcorder doesnt have the ability to shoot in widescreen mode, which can be a pain in the ass if you have widescreen TV and if you dont know very well how to use videoediting software. So, overall, excellent camcorder for it's price and you can't go wrong with it.Read full review
I've owned a few Sony Mini DV Camcorders and a couple from other manufufacturers, and in my opinion you can't do better than this little machine for sheer quality and ease of use. The picture and sound quality are both excellent and it's extremely simple to use, the 40x Optical Zoom is fantastic too ! One of the things I like most about the Sony Mini DV range is the fact that they are equiped with Viewfinders - most Hard Drive and some DVD based machines are no longer equipped with Viewfinders, you have to film via the screen, OK for a kids birthday party or anything that's not moving much, completely useless for anything moving fast, such as sports or transport, or anything in bright sunlight. I absolutely must have a Viewfinder so given the Audio / Video quality, the huge Optical Zoom, the DV Output socket (for dubbing to an external recorder) and the prescence of a Viewfinder this is the perfect machine for me. Buy one of these and you won't regret it !Read full review
its really easy to use and the touch screen makes things so much straight forward to use too. i bought it to replace the one i had stolen on me. the tapes are great as well because you can record over what you have already recorded unlike with some of the disc ones you get for around the same price.
If you are looking for a proper video camera to shoot some nice no nonsense footage, this one works well, results look great on my 37" LCD-TV. The tapes are a great instant and cheap backup, editing the film is much easier and faster than the new formats. Have a cup of tea while the movie transfers to your pc. this thing is windows moviemaker compatible. 40X optical zoom is useful if you forgot to bring your binoculars. All in all, it's one of those good old sony products, well put together and works.
