The M-Audio Fast Track Pro is a home/mobile recording interface that is designed for musicians or anyone who has a need to record themself, but since I do not play music or make podcasts, I acquired it in order to take advantage of one of its other unique features: as an inexpensive digital-analog converter (DAC). If you've owned a CD player or have an iPod dock, you already have some familiarity with DACs; they basically transfer the digitized music on a CD into a form that can be amplified and played through standard speakers. Similarly, the Fast Track Pro enabled me to play the music in my iTunes through my home stereo system. It has a USB input that allows it to be used as an outboard DAC, so I connected it to my computer and "Voila!", no more tinny sounding music on tiny computer speakers. It was really simple to do: I just ran a standard USB cable from the Fast Track Pro (it comes with a 6ft long cable) into my computer and then ran standard RCA cables from one set of the Fast Track Pro's outputs (it has two sets) into my receiver's "Tape" input. It took about 5 minutes to set whole thing up. As I mentioned at the onset of this review, perhaps the best thing is that the Fast Track Pro provided an economical solution to my needs. Even the cheapest outboard DACs go for over $200, and for that price you don't usually get the kind of mid-fi sound the Fast Track Pro provides. You'd have to pay nearly $1000 for something that beats it. Since the Fast Track Pro is designed for musicians to record themselves, the sound quality has to be a step up. I'm pretty happy to have found this unique, inexpensive solution and put it to use.Read full review
M-Audio Fast Track Pro Digital Recording Interface is a combination of reliability and low price. This is another unit of production of M-Audio features small size, the quality of the analog-digital process, the presence of two microphone inputs. Are supported by phantom power. The interface has its own software. The device connects to the connector USB. The main advantage of the device, in my opinion, is ergonomic to use. This is a very good option for outbound DJ or for home work a normal user who appreciates quality external sound card. Why you bought it? - because I trust M-Audio as a manufacturer of audio devices What you like most about it? - ergonomics of use What you dislike about it? - certainly it is a quality device for small money, but for professionals in the field of sound does not fit Whether or not you would buy the product again? - buyer who knows exactly what he needed - there will always be pleased with your purchase.Read full review
I'm using the fast track pro with Garageband '11. It is very easy to setup and the software automatically recognizes it. So far I have only recorded with an electric guitar; haven't tried two track recording, microphone or the midi channel. I had to use the RCA outputs to get a good signal to my stereo system for monitor. Don't worry about the green signal light when playing electric guitar, it flickers but you will know by the monitor whether your connections and settings are correct. I would recommend this for any novice who wants a quick, easy-to-use interface. Recording quality is great if you use good cables. The usb seems to handle two way traffic well and there is almost no delay in the monitor feedback which helps you stay in time. I have not used any comparable devices, but I think this one is good for the money.Read full review
I bought this unit as part of a package with ProTools MP9 in order to upgrade my home studio. The unit seems to be a good solid unit that has several nice features over the similar M-Audio Pre. The one specific problem I've had with it so far is that both the M-Audio Fast Track and the accompanying ProTools MP9 claim they record at 96 khz, but the most I've been able to adjust them to is 48 khz. So the upgrade I'd hoped for has been a slight one. Still, for the price I guess that wasn't bad. ProTools MP9 comes with a User's Guide that's 1278 pages long, so the learning curve on that software is pretty steep, but I feel like the M-Audio Fast Track itself is truly pretty simple and straight forward, and it seems to do what it's supposed to.
I bought this product because I had been wanting to make better recordings on my computer and my sound card just wasn't cutting it. My friend said I needed a pre-amp so I decided on this one because of the relatively low price and it looked easy to use.Well at first I was very confused with this product, I had to go download a driver to make it work with Vista and then it took me a little while and some interenet surfing to get it up and running but once I did I was as happy as could be. Having to go download drivers for newer operating systems was a bit of a hassle but it was more than worth it. M-Audio's website was easy to use and told you exactly which driver you needed. They installed quickly and this thing records wonderfully. It comes with a USB cable and it will run off of that so no power supply needed unless you're not going to record using the USB. The pre-amps are extremely quiet so you have nearly no static or white noise in your recordings. If you're wanting to do some home recordings I suggest getting this. With a little bit of patience it'll be up and working in no time and recording what ever your heart desires. The only bad thing I have to say about this thing other than having to download the drivers for your proper operating system is that while the pre-amps are extremely quiet they could be a little hotter. You have to turn the input volume nearly all the way up to get a good usable signal. Other than that I really have no qualms about it.Read full review

I was a little concerned about this product at first after reading many mixed reviews - most negative. But, there were enough positive ones, so I decided for the price it was worth taking a shot. And I'm glad I did! Granted, if you don't follow the installation instructions step for step, the Pro-tools software that is included can be a little tempramental. However, there are great install/set-up videos that AVID had made available on youtube. I followed these precisely, and the installation went with out a hitch and the operation works great. One set back is it takes a while to start up the Pro-tools application. But once it's up and running and your M-Audio Fast Track is hooked up, it is very easy to record.
It's an awesome device. Little and very powerfull. The installation is fast and easy (it's plug&play but it's necesary install the corresponding driver). When all is installed, on general settings we could change general parameters and configure the quality and volume of the input and output devices. Although his little size, it has a reasonable number of inputs and outputs conections, more than enough for the domestic users. Summarizing, a great option to enter on instruments management and tracks editing world.
I have owned a Fast Track with the one XLR input for a while. I also own a Presonus Firestudio (26 I/O), and I find this Fast Track Pro to be a great tool for field recordings and many other uses. I needed a USB interface with phantom power, so I chose this unit. I got a great deal on it, considering the features. I can run my record player into it stereo, which will help in a future punk/hardcore/weird podcast I intend to start. In addition, I'm going to get a new midi controller (Axiom 61) soon and I'll start producing hip hop and synthy/atmospheric music. As far as the Fast Track goes, the pre's can be a bit sterile, but they can be warmed up through VST plug-ins. I love the pad that comes built in on each channel. It's compact enough to pack up for a weekend concert trip and interview bands (because you don't need to worry about a power supply for this thing), or I could sit around and make funny rap songs all day with a decent quality. For 100 bucks used, this thing is where it's at!Read full review
The Fast Track USB (1st Gen with only 1 Mic/line Input, the pictured one has 4) is very easy to use, all controls and connections are obvious, a nice one for beginners. Easy to control, latency is OK, but the preamp will get noisy when cranked all the way up. This can be a problem if you have a low output microphone (like certain MXLs) because you'll get more noise with the main signal if you want decent levels of operations. Drivers are easy to install, doesn't have Phantom Power (boooo!!!), but for the price paid, it will do the job (small ones, of course).
