Affordable thermostat
Upgraded our home to a wifi thermostat so we can control the temperature when on vacation. True to the description it was extremely easy to install. We had a C wire and connected it as well. Dual zoning so we connected 2 of them and had it installed and working in under an hour. The app has some neat features that can help protect the heating/ cooling equipment as well. Looks good and allows manual control as well in case the app goes down. We did not want a learning thermostat, needed 2 numbers and after a lot of research picked the Emerson Sensi over the Honeywell. Got them on eBay as it was cheaper. Highly recommend this product. Works well, maybe not the best for hydronic radiant floor heating
Installed easily. Tech support is good. I found that whatever you set the temperature at, it will continue heating for quite a while after reaching that temperature. It appears to go right up to the threshold of the next degree before shutting down. There are reaction settings (fast, medium, slow) for how quickly it reacts to the ambient temperature and switches on or off. With radiant heating they suggest slow reaction. Problem is, it keeps the radiant heating on for much longer than necessary since the radiant heat heats everything in the room not just the air in the room. For hydronic heating, I would suggest a thermostat with a floor temperature probe as well. WiFi seems to work well.Installed easily. Tech support is good. Emerson Sensi WiFi Thermostat is awesome - have 3 of them.
I've installed one of these thermostats in our urban house and two more in our "mountain cabin". Can warm up the place before we head up on the weekend using my iPhone. Interface is very intuitive -- uses about 50 MB data/month for each thermostat (I was told by Emerson). Installation and wiring using iPhone app was straightforward (with the exception of selecting the right kind of AC unit vs heat pump). Had a nice little built in level and cover goes on/off smoothly. Unit looks good and keeping the illumination on does not seem to affect the temperature reading -- unlike my old thermostat. No frills Wifi thermostat for remote control HVAC
I was looking for a replacement thermostat for an old school rotary mechanical thermostat. By the time I looked at top rated 7 day programmable thermostats, they were already in the $50-$60 range and decided to take a look at programmable wifi thermostats to see what will another $50 get you? The most well known smart thermostat is the Nest, yes it looks cool, has motion sensors, geofencing, and other reporting type functionality but the killer functionality that would matter to me is controlling my thermostat remotely from my phone. I've used programmable thermostats before and just wanted the convenience of remotely adjusting when my daily schedule changes. Getting off early? turn on the air manually while driving home. Don't think I'm too tempted by geofencing and reporting ... I was looking for a replacement thermostat for an old school rotary mechanical thermostat. My thermostat sits on the second floor in the foyer so the Nest's motion sensor would have done me no good, nor will its good looks matter as it's not in a highly visible location. The other fault I find with the Nest are the terrifying reviews that units can fail in either on or off positions; when/if the unit goes bad it can get stuck on non stop heat or cold. The risk of equipment damage is not worth it to me. While this thermostat is less well known than the Nest, amazon's search results brought it to my attention and decided that for $50 more than what I was going to spend on a solid programmable it was worth risk. Installation was easy for me since I only use it with a cooling system, there are practically no instructions in the box as everything is in the app. For my application I had to pretend I had the red and white wires as well and on we went. installation pretty much comes down to shutting of the breaker, remove wires and put them in the same spot on the new thermostat, wall mount/stick the back plate, turn everything back on, continue set up via app, and done. I did some additional painting since the wall spot was bare and installed the lockstate connect adapter as well to provide the needed C wire for my application. That consisted of drilling a small hole near baseboard and fishing a small ~5 ft run of wire. Another tip, the unit will run wifi even on batteries, if you have existing wiring inside the wall it can connect to C wire there too, the app will only show the keep backlight on option if it has a valid C wire input for power. DO NOT throw out the thermostat wifi code, initial setup requires your mobile device to connect directly to the thermostat and from there you give it your home network password. If you ever have to replace or reset the unit, you will need this code again. It's been a week now and so far so good, the plain design blends in nondescriptly and the temp reading is big enough for me to read from downstairs. With the app, I had a schedule set up in no time and was able to turn on the fan and adjust temp on wifi and LTE. It's not a conversation piece like the nest; it just gets the job done and gets out of my way. *EDIT* It's been about a month now and i've been playing with the app mostly since that's where all the settings truly are. The AC protect feature in my opinion should be set to on by default to prevent frequent cycling of equipment. There's also early start which aims to have the house at set temp at the time you want it to be. I found that it turned my ac on about 2 hours+ earlier than my set time. Maybe it learns how long it takes over time but it was simpler for me to just have it come on at set times instead since my first floor stays cool throughout the day anyways. Haven't had any issues at all connecting to the thermostat other than spotty cell service at times. Update after a whole summer Thermostat has worked flawlessly over the entire summer, never experienced any connection issues and liked the experience so much that I've gone ahead and bought another one for the downstairs heat control. I did have an issue with the unit reading 9 degrees warmer but a quick call to customer service resolved that in no time. Had to cut the RC/RH jumper wire and that was it. Customer service picked up the phone after just a few rings, not sure if it was a slow day but that was impressive! The app does support more than one thermostat but defaults to the first one, so I have to manually switch over to the second one.

Smart Wifi Thermostat
This is an older Smart Thermostat which does not require a C-wire as the newer Smart units do. That is why I specifically selected it .... no need to go into the attic and create a C-wire workaround! The Sensi phone app is very good at guiding you through the install process. Only snafu I had was getting multiple schedules created. Had to enable a setting to proceed with that. My electric company does not offer a rebate on the Sensi. Check with yours before buying if saving extra money by buying a newer model is a priority.
