SynopsisIn the year 2020, elderly hippie Cobb Anderson constructs intelligent robots who take control of the moon and offer Cobb a change at immortality.
A futuristic view with tunnel vision, Rucker probed the ascent of artificial intelligence while ignoring other technology issues, giving this story an antiquated tone while simultaneously exploring futuristic technologies, reminiscent of Jules Verne. (Verne never conceived the cyberpunk of Rucker!)
In Software, retired computer scientist Cobb Anderson, in his seventies, lives in florida, smoking pot, and reminiscing about the days when he created the "Boppers." The Boppers are intelligent Robots (although there is frankly nothing robotic about their brains). Humans, fearing that the Boppers would supplant them as the highest intelligence on Earth, have exiled the Boppers to the moon. No problem. Their circuitry works best at absolute zero. Some Boppers secretly return to Earth to find Cobb, their creator, to offer him immortality. His brain will be eternal. His body, not so much. Hilarious and thought provoking. A cult classic that should not be missed!
