A Gorgeous, Lengthy (Yet Familiar) Epic Quest
Drakensang: The Dark Eye is based on a Tolkien/Dungeons and Dragons-style series from Germany that I hadn't heard much about until a friend recommended this game to me. After spending quite some time with it, I'd absolutely recommend this to fans of the D & D PC games, Neverwinter Nights and other classics. Between the outstanding visuals, tons of quests, side missions and interesting characters you come across, the game provides many, many hours of solid, albeit familiar fun. At the beginning, you can choose from a wide range of male or female avatars in Human, Elf or Dwarf form. There are a load of classes and while some seem similar (Thief, Burgular or some of the magic-users), each has pros and cons that affect things like conversation skills and resistance to certain types of magical ... After spending quite some time with it, I'd absolutely recommend this to fans of the D & D PC games, Neverwinter Nights and other classics. Between the outstanding visuals, tons of quests, side missions and interesting characters you come across, the game provides many, many hours of solid, albeit familiar fun. At the beginning, you can choose from a wide range of male or female avatars in Human, Elf or Dwarf form. There are a load of classes and while some seem similar (Thief, Burgular or some of the magic-users), each has pros and cons that affect things like conversation skills and resistance to certain types of magical effects. You can choose a default character setting or use Expert Mode to fully tweak your avatar's stats before you start the game. There are a ton of skills and settings to fiddle with and leveling up will give you points to play around with as well. This system can be daunting to new players, but if you stick with it, you'll create a powerhouse hero or villain as the game progresses. Combat can be real-time or paused so you can plan your moves out. I'd highly recommend pausing, as enemies are all fast and there are penalties involved when taking on a larger force. You start out with your main character, but can have up to four companions in your party based on who you meet up with in the game in your travels. Some characters are easy to have join your cause, while others require a bit of work. Choosing who to take along is tricky because you'll need to have the right balance of toughness, ranged skills (weapons and magic), healing and charisma (among other factors) in order to survive the later maps. Movement is handled with the WASD keys and mouse or by clicking with the mouse. You want to stick to the keyboard/mouse movement, as the game camera is a bit weird. Unlike isometric or first-person RPG's, Drakensang's adjustable camera tends to be a bit too floaty and finicky in some locations. You get used to it in some spots, but in tight caves and other close-in areas, it's a tad to slippery for its own good. This isn't a game-killer, however. Visually, the game is stunning (the US version has a fantastic high-resolution patch on the disc) and should run on a wide range of XP and Vista PC's with a decent processor and 3D card (at least P4, 2.4 GHz and a GeForce 6600 card). With all the effects cranked up and running at the highest video settings, you'll be snapping screen shots to use as desktop wallpaper in some areas. The music and sounds are great, but the voice acting can a bit too much on the intentionally humorous side for some of the more oddball characters. The developer, Radon Labs, also made the super-underrated PC action/strategy game Project Nomads, one of those quirky "pick it up if you see it" games that does something new with a few different genres. Overall, the game succeeds quite well at what it does, but if you're looking for a fantasy RPG that's 100% original, you might be disappointed in some of the more pedestrian RPG elements presented here. On the other hand, if you love developing your characters as the level up and playing around in a vast, beautiful game world for hours on end, you'll absolutely want to give Drakensang: the Dark Eye a spin.
