A Huge Letdown.
I was a huge fan of Lonely Island's first album, Incredibad [CD/DVD], and always hoped that Andy Samberg's fake rap outfit wouldn't be a one-album wonder. As a result, I was extremely excited when I saw that Turtleneck & Chain was scheduled for release and purchased it without sampling the album first. Sadly, I was very let down by the offerings this time around. The reason Incredibad worked so well was because it relied heavily on sheer ridiculousness: an 80s-style power anthem about Space Olympics, Natalie Portman singing a gangsta rap, and the trio's predilection toward denim mutilation. This doesn't mean to say that Incredibad skimped on the nasty, but it was balanced nicely by all of the great out-of-left-field song concepts. Turtleneck & Chain, ... Turtleneck & Chain, on the other hand, exchanges most of the extreme outlandishness for basic crude humor that, not surprisingly, simply isn't funny (see: "We're Back!" and "Watch Me Do Me"). In addition, "Shy Ronnie 2" is merely a retread of the far superior "Sax Man," while "After Party" references the group's own (better) song, "Like A Boss." There are a few bright spots on the disc, namely "Mama," "I Just Had Sex" and and SNL classic "Motherlover." But listeners would do better to pick and choose their favorite tracks from Turtleneck & Chain via digital download than purchase the entire album.
