The Etymotic ER-4S are high-quality, audiophile-grade IEMs (in-ear monitors) with a more accurate and defined sound stage than many other more expensive IEMs, e.g. Shure SE530/535, Westone 4/4R, Triple.Fi 10 Pro, Sennheiser IE80. Unlike the ER-4P/PT, the ER-4S have an impedance of 100 Ohms, making them perfect for use with a portable amplifier -- one of the trendiest accessories in personal audio today. The increased impedance gives the 4S version a more refined bass signature than the ER4P/PT. One disclaimer worth noting, especially if these are your first IEMs is to try out the different ear tips even if the first ones fit well because the bass can vary depending on the tips used. It will also take some adjustment time to get used to the lows, as well as how the sound is reproduced with your body movement.Read full review
I travel a lot. I see people take out their large and overpriced Bose noise canceling headphones and sit back in smugness. I've used noise canceling headphones for over 10 years, so I know what they are like. If you like distortion, they are great! The problem is that these phones were developed for piloting small planes originally. I've used them for their intended purpose, and they work as advertised. But I happen to like music. And the same circuitry that produces a canceling pattern against noise also affects your music. In a bad way. The Etymotics isolate you from the noise. Sort of like good earplugs with excellent headphones built in. Plus, these fellows are flat! People who want distorted bass that pounds their flesh will be disappointed. If you want to hear your music the way that the artist wanted you to hear it, and on the run, these are the real deal. They are small and light, but, honestly, they aren't for people who won't place them in their ears properly. They have to go *way* in to isolate. If you do all that, you will not be disappointed.Read full review
Want a pair of this for a long time, and finally pick up one as a great deal. Highs are clear, defined Used to have a pair of Etymotic HF3, which essentially the same as the HF5. I find the ER4 seems a bit more difficult to insert to ear compare to the hf3. Not sure why. Anyhow, this is a great pair of earphone for those look for clear, neutral, noise-isolating, but not excessive amount bass.
