There are certain actresses in this world of facade we call "Hollywood" who KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO ACT. These actresses take us to places where we never could have imagined we could go or sometimes don't want to go. Sally Field plays Karen McCann...a happily married and successful business woman. She has a great husband, Mack whom she has a daughter Megan (Alexandra Kyle) with and a daughter who is older (17) from another failed marriage Julie (Olivia Burnette). The story is based on a novel by Betty Mahmoody (TRUE STORY!!) about a parent's WORST NIGHTMARE. Karen's daughter Olivia comes home early from school to help set up a birthday party for her baby sister. She receives a phone call from Karen checking on things and a knock comes at the door. Enter (in my opinion one of the SLEAZIEST characters played BEAUTIFULLY played by Kiefer Sutherland), Robert Doob. A delivery driver who delivers a horrible nightmare to Karen's family! While ON THE PHONE WITH HER MOTHER, Olivia answers the door and is brutally and savagely raped and murdered. The scene is INTENSELY hard to watch but is needed so the viewer can appreciate the importance of how awful Robert Doob is. Karen hears the whole the thing while on the phone. When she arrives to the house...her daughter is dead and the place is a mess. She has problems and her work and marriage suffer. Detective Sergeant Joe Denillo (Joe Mantegna) assures Karen there is enough DNA evidence to help catch the killer. He also encourages her and her husband to seek counseling. The judge dismisses the case due to DNA mishandelings. Robert Doob walks and justice fails. Without ruining the ending, Karen takes matters into her own hands and all I can say is this: I don't think I would handle it any different. It's a painful film at parts but is one of those rare GEMS that, if given a chance, will be one of the viewers favorites. Not to be watched with a young child (graphic rape and murder scenes). Sally delivers and Ed is WONDERFUL as the supportive frustrated husband. I adore Kiefer Sutherland because of his ability to shine in any role. Despicable as "Robert Doob". In an interview with Oprah, the author said it was very painful to be present during Julie's "murder scene". I understand why. 5/5 stars! Justice will prevail!Read full review

In 1996, saw this movie - it's one you will probably never forget. When law-justice let's the innocent down - is vigilante-justice acceptable. This is the premise of EYE FOR AN EYE - and the ending fit the crimes committed. GUARANTEED - YOU WILL NOT FORGET THIS MOVIE.

Sally Field's grieving mom is one of her most intense and convincing roles. Kieffer Southerland as the vicious Robert Doob personifies evil. The justice system is more concerned with covering its butt than protecting the innocent. Surely they can't release a murderous rapist on the flimsiest pretext? Can they? The stage is set for a shattering conclusion. The film was blasted by the critics and received no major awards. Perhaps the skewering of our wrong-headed courts sunk it. Truth can be painful. Still, movie goers voted by seeing it." Eye for an Eye" is one the best of the genre. That's why I had to have the DVD.
I seen it when it first came out, but my boyfriend hasn't, so I got it for him to watch. He loved it too!
