About this product

Product Information

In this striking documentary shot in 2003, early on in the US-led war on Iraq, a group of American soldiers in Baghdad who have taken over a bombed-out palace that belonged to Uday Hussein, the son of Saddam Hussein, offer the camera a view on their world. While they party poolside for most of the day and lead raids on homes of suspected bomb-builders most nights, they also have a lot to say about the war and their situation. Rapping to each other or to the camera, they use rhyme to speak their minds about various aspects of the war, their day-to-day duties, and life in Iraq. Their youth and immaturity is striking, as is the war itself and the nebulous reasons that they are stationed there. While the primary purpose of GUNNER PALACE is to give the perspective of the soldiers, secondarily viewers get a glimpse of Iraqi civilians and how they react to the US military presence--some are terrified, others are skeptical, still others are compliant and grateful if not totally sure why. However, giving voice to the soldiers remains the film's major theme, and for this reason, filmmakers Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein appealed the original R-rating given to the film by the MPAA, and won. With a PG-13 rating, filmmakers explained, teenagers considering military careers can watch the film and benefit from seeing soldiers in combat and hearing them talk about what it's like.

The photo arrived with yellow spots on it; in fairness, it may have been because the envelope was rained on - the delivery service left it exposed to the weather. It was inexpensive and the seller shipped promptly. No refund requested or necessary.

  • Top favourable review

Engaging, if not exactly a slick production.

Even during slow periods, it provided me with a flood of memories from my own time in theatre during Desert Storm. Not a documentary or even a real cohesive story line in the film, but a clunky yet accurate representation of daily life of soldiers in a lingering combat zone very much worth seeing. Really shows how quickly last year’s high school graduates can adapt to a threatening, miserable environment and become men.

  • Gunner Palace

I am a big fan of military movies and documentaries. This is a great movie about the war in Iraq and the situations that our military family members endure on a daily basis. The movie is shown as a behind the scenes look of what the war on terror is really like in and out of the streets of Baghdad. I love this film it is a great buy. You also get a first hand look at how the new military troops are handling their situations.

  • You are there

Very personable. You meet several young people giving it all they have to do a job. Terror, humor, crassness, vulgarity. In- your- face drama. These are not Rambo wannabees, they are real faces, real people. Just like in the Nam, or in the Mog, you see young people watching their buddies backs as they see friends by day, enemies the next. You can almost smell the smoke, and feel the rocks hitting your helmet as you search for the bad guys. Kids should be made to see this very important film, if nothing else to respect the Folks over their doing an impossible job

  • An interesting look inside the life...........

This documentry is a good look at the in's and out's of life for our American Soldiers serving in Iraq. The footage was filmed at the same time my husband was serving there and his unit get's a mention. This is a good watch/gift for those serving in the military or that enjoy military documentries. Many that have never served may not understand the "sense of humor."

  • I was there!

I was there. This is the no kidding truth!! I have read where the Veitnam vets said that they didn't fight for God and country. They fought for each other. This movie hits dead on. It is a reflection on our country before it is a reflection of our Army!! If you are an American you should be forced to watch this movie. I only wish you could smell the air and fell the pride that these young men have. I am very proud to have served with these men. And feel quilty that I have not given more. CW3 McMurry(RET)
