Synopsis
Popol Vuh, the Quiché Mayan book of creation, is not only the most important text in the native languages of the Americas, it is also an extraordinary document of the human imagination. It begins with the deeds of Mayan gods in the darkness of a primeval sea and ends with the radiant splendor of the Mayan lords who founded the Quiché kingdom in the Guatemalan highlands. Originally written in Mayan hieroglyphs, it was transcribed into the Roman alphabet in the sixteenth century. This new edition of Dennis Tedlock's unabridged, widely praised translation includes new notes and commentary, newly translated passages, newly deciphered hieroglyphs, and over forty new illustrations., Popol Vuh, the Quich Mayan book of creation, is not only the most important text in the native languages of the Americas, it is also an extraordinary document of the human imagination. I didn't see a verbal description of this book as "hardcover" or paperback. Cover design and price were similar to both cover styles. I thought I'd left a question for the seller, but I may have done something wrong. The package was too small to match the hardcovers previously received so I returned it unopened. Seller was very efficient, and packaging offered excellent protection. Haven't checked to see if refund was processed.

  • Authentic Representation

The Popol Vu is by far the most important portal into pre-contact Maya beliefs available today. Written by Maya scribes in Latin characters, it related several mythical sagas that dated back hundreds of years. Of the various translations from the Mayan language, Dennis Tedlock's is arguably the most authentic. Besides academic studies, he pursued training with a native elder and specialist in Maya traditional culture to attain the rank of Day Keeper and engaged the same specialist, Andrés Xiloj Peruch, in ferreting out the meanings of language written in Sixteenth-Century Mayan. The text is evocative and captivating, as one would expect from an author like Tedlock, who is Professor of both English and Anthropology Research at New York State University.
