...it seems to me that the three-day gauntlet forces instinct to the fore; in the absence of conceptual and rewrite time, the writerly subconscious drives things on. Kupferschmidt's instincts have guided him flawlessly in this tough-minded and deeply moral look at the cost of being good in evil times. --Jim Bartley of The Globe and Mail, ...it seems to me that the three-day gauntlet forces instinct to the fore; in the absence of conceptual and rewrite time, the writerly subconscious drives things on. Synopsis
The winner of the thirtieth annual International 3-Day Novel Contest. In 1968, an inconsequential civil servant finds himself swept into the mechanism of state oppression when the Soviet Union invades Czechoslovakia. Put to work processing the arrest warrants of anyone who opposes the repressive regime, he falls quickly into the moral no-man's-land of repressive bureaucracy. As his humanity succumbs to the requirements of state doctrine, a series of chance encounters leads him to realize that in the world of men, there are no saints, no ideologies, no proclamations for a perfect salvation, only the fundamental choice: to act or not. A remarkable literary debut. John Kupferschmidt 's inspiration for this novel came from his parents, who arrived in North America as political refugees from the former Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia.

- l***a (6748)- Feedback left by buyer.Past yearVerified purchaseEXCELLENT book...VERY WELL packaged. The item arrived disgracefully late, but this is no fault of the seller, who clearly mailed it on he date he claimed. The good old USPS messed this one up. At one point, tracking records said the package had been delivered to a front porch in some godforsaken burg somewhere in Middle Tennessee, hundred of miles from me. Reckon they recovered it and sent it on. Annoying. But not at all the seller's fault. I'd certainly buy here again.Thorazine Beach by Bradley Harris (2013, Trade Paperback) (#364447460654)

- k***k (145)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseShipping was fast and well-packed. However, I would rate the book as "Fair" condition, not "Very Good" as advertised. Many pages were highlighted with writing in margins, and there was a significant water stain. This seller might tend to be optimistic when describing condition.
