Perfect For Water Distiller
I use this with a one gallon water distiller. The original burned out years ago and I've been toying with different elements ever since. I finally fell in love with this one, and for various reasons. 1. It fits. I did have to buy a screw in adapter for the 4 bolt square flange mounting surface, but the screw in adapter is fairly inexpensive. The length is the key part, as a 1 gallon distiller is too small for most elements. This one is goes close to 6 inches into the tank. So as long as your tank is more than 6 inches wide....you're good to go. 2. It's 1440 watts. And 120 volts. This is crucial, because 1375 watts will not boil water. It'll just get really hot. and a 1500 watt element will boil water faster, but wastes more water and places a heavy load on wiring. I have had circuit ... It'll just get really hot. and a 1500 watt element will boil water faster, but wastes more water and places a heavy load on wiring. I have had circuit breakers blow with the 1500 watters. With the 1440 watt element, I turn 1 gallon of water into about 6/7 gallon of distilled water. The process takes exactly 2 hours with 120 volts. The distiller I use is a primitive yet all stainless steel and aluminum lab or restaurant style unit probably from the 70's or 80s. It has a stove top hood vent style motor to run the fan. It used to use a mechanical thermo style circuit breaker to shut it off, now long obsolete. So I just use a timer. Which is a dangerous way to go, since if the timer fails to work....you blow a circuit breaker in the house. I've done that a few times now and had to buy a new heater element each time. Once the water line goes below the heater element, the heater element overheats and melts in two, and always takes the house breaker with it. The house was built in the 60's and have a 15 amp trip-style circuit breaker. Let's do some math here. ....1440 watts at 120 volts is 12 amps. So you can see why the 15 amp circuit breaker is easy to trip. Once that element is above the water line, it gets overheated....and so it's wattage goes up quick! Because it's melting. I have scared the crap out of myself a few times, from allowing the water line to get below the element level. Loud noises, flickering lights, etc. and then I have to buy a new element and maybe do some rewiring of the distiller. Yes, I have had to replace the power cord of the distiller once, because it uses a lot of juice and it melted the plug to where the prongs fell out. This isn't a game. I think I'll buy another circuit breaker. 13 amp. And place it inline between the plug and outlet.
