Personnel includes: Nessie Lessons, Penn Jillette (vocals); Annie Stocking, Jeanette Sartain, Joan Cashel (background vocals). All songs written by The Residents. MARK OF THE MOLE was the first in a supposed trilogy that The Residents began in the early '80s. It was followed by the second part, THE TUNES OF TWO CITIES. A third installment to resolve the convoluted tale of the Moles vs. the Chubbs never appeared, though THE BIG BUBBLE ("Part Four of The Mole Trilogy") presented a band, named after the album title, which figured in the story. The mythology the Residents constructed on ESKIMO, as well as their own faux self-historification, led them quite naturally to build the parallel culture presented on this disc, and to wrestle with its racial/species divisions. The band's usual mix of fractured melodicism, chant-like singing and foreboding landscapes lends this work a viable sense of place. As with most of the The Residents' recordings, MARK OF THE MOLE offers no easy answers, but rewards the listener for entering the band's strange universe in the first place.
