El libro, es fundamentalmente una gu a de las serpientes como seres vivos; y es por ello que, se intenta incluir el mayor n mero de especies de serpientes reportadas en todo el territorio nacional. Uno de los problemas del conocimiento de los ofidios, es que no son f ciles de ver, excepto en serpentarios, o cuando aparecen espont neamente en cualquier lugar, incluso en nuestras viviendas y este hecho, produce temor e inseguridad por el desconocimiento que se tiene de las serpientes, aun cuando se trate de un animal inofensivo, o de una amenaza inminente; por cuya raz n, es necesario que exista una preparaci n b sica para identificar las serpientes; y esto se puede lograr, con la lectura y el aprendizaje de esta gu a. Hojeando sus p ginas y observando las im genes, permite familiarizarse con las distintas especies, logrando as , amortiguar la antipat a y el temor que estos reptiles ocasionan al com n de la poblaci n en momentos inesperados. Injustamente, todas las serpientes han sido consideradas como animales peligrosos y da inos al ser humano, y es el hombre quien le ha declarado la guerra a como d lugar; tan es as , que existe un viejo adagio del argot popular que expresa: "Culebra vista... culebra muerta". Es cierto que existen ofidios muy venenosos, pero si se toman medidas elementales de precauci n, la peligrosidad de una mordedura fatal es muy poco factible. Por el contrario, la importancia natural de su existencia queda absolutamente comprobada, si tomamos en cuenta que la mayor a de las serpientes son animales t midos que no quieren tener nada que ver con la gente; opuestamente ellas pueden ser beneficiosas, porque dentro de su dieta controlan infinidad de especies efectivamente perjudiciales, tales como: peque os mam feros, principalmente roedores (ratas y ratones); artr podos (insectos, crust ceos y ar cnidos); moluscos (caracoles y babosas); anfibios (sapos, ranas y salamandras); lagartijas, y muchas serpientes venenosas entre otros y; al mismo tiempo pueden servir de alimento para otros animales silvestres. Se se ala incluso que, las toxinas de las m s venenosas, son utilizadas por la ciencia para corregir enfermedades. Con las prote nas del veneno de serpiente, se crean f rmacos para los accidentes cerebro y cardiovasculares; tambi n, los investigadores del c ncer se han unido a la batalla, tratando de descubrir nuevos tratamientos para la curaci n del c ncer. Las serpientes son cosmopolitas, no est limitada su distribuci n geogr fica espec ficamente a las zonas boscosas, ni muestran en su naturaleza de vida caracter sticas propias de los animales propiamente del bosque. Con excepci n de las regiones polares, las serpientes frecuentan todos los sitios de la Tierra, en bosques, monta as, selvas, llanuras, desiertos, incluso en espacios que ha invadido el hombre, ellas est n presentes. Como animales de temperatura variable (Ectot rmicos), com nmente llamados animales de sangre fr a; estos seres prefieren las zonas tropicales y subtropicales, especialmente aquellos lugares donde existen buenos recursos h dricos y ricas fuentes alimenticias, lo cual sucede en las zonas anteriormente mencionadas. Utilizan la conducta para controlar la temperatura del cuerpo, dependiendo de fuentes externas para la obtenci n de su temperatura corporal; para calentarse, se tienden bajo el sol todo el d a o permanecen bajo el agua durante la noche.
