"When historical fiction clicks, there's nothing more gripping . . . and C.J. Sansom's fantastic Sovereign left me positively baying for more. It's that good. . . . Rebellion, plots, torture, fanaticism, a murder mystery and a real historical scandal come alive in this deeply satisfying novel." -Deirdre Donahue, USA Today "Authors of the caliber of P. D. James, Ruth Rendell, Ian Rankin, and Minette Walters remain rare. C. J. Sansom's Sovereign . . . deserves as wide a readership as any of the above. . . . It's deeper, stronger, and subtler than most novels in the genre." - The Sunday Independent (London), "When historical fiction clicks, there's nothing more gripping . . . and C.J. • Fascinating Mystery

The stories here are mysteries set in the time of England's Henry VIII. I read these for the basic mystery but I enjoy the flavor of the circa 1540 setting. What a terrible and depressing time to live in! If you need a pick me up, read one of these, enjoy the mystery in the story, experience a bit through the written word what the conditions were like back 'then', and check to see if your teeth are still in place and your head is still on your shoulders. It makes me glad that we have nothing to do with a Monarchy. :)

  • Rebellion in the Reign of Henry VIII

    C. J. Sansom's Shardlake series is addictive: the Protagonist is a lawyer on the political fringes during the reign of Henry VIII. Shardlake and his sidekick Barak investigate crimes ranging from the theft of military secrets to the attempted assassination attempts against the King and other high-ranking officials. Consequently, the details of torture and execution are not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach.

  • Historical fiction at its best

Very good historical fiction. Not formulaic, at about 500 pages will last a week reading at a moderate pace. I really enjoyed it and plan on reading the whole series.
