Why does Lord of the Rings get all the credit when this, by any measure of writing quality, is undeniably a better book? Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge devotee (I won't demean it by using the word 'fan') of LotR....but this is just.....better. Richer, darker, chewier. It resonates with all the richness of language.

Fabulous book. After a slowish start where I thought the text a bit old fashioned I got into it and found it exciting and very well written.

This predates Game of Thrones and has as many ,if not more twists and turns in the plot line . Difficult at the start , but soon hooks you in , and is very difficult to put down . Great story.

On some of the reviews I have read and listened to suggest that this book is similar to lord of the rings. It may have some poetry in it but I think it is deeper in gothic themes.

I read this first as a 12-year-old but re-reading it is just as compelling. Gormenghast is an extraordinary creation, and Peake is a masterly writer, vivid and as imaginatively fertile as Dickens, but with a gothic twist.
