In my review of Twilight, I said that the book had more in common with "Catcher in the Rye" and "Pride and Prejudice" than it did with any vampire novels or stories. That still holds true, although be certain: I'm not comparing Twilight or New Moon to these books in terms of literary quality. There are few that match either. In New Moon we miss the vampires for most of the story, and Bella spends time with her friend Jacob, an Indian fated with becoming a werewolf, and fated to hate all "bloodsuckers", regardless of whether or not the bloodsuckers took human lives. (Btw, that little bit is cleared up at the end...what exactly their treaty entails. It's interesting, kind of, but I have to wonder if the author thought of it as the story was being written, and that it wasn't planned when the "treaty" was first mentioned. I suppose it doesn't matter.) If you're reading this story because you like vampire stories, you will be disappointed. Edward's only around for a bit less than 1/3 of the book. When he is around, however, his presence is appreciated. One thing that the author didn't do this time, and it was similarly appreciated, was to have Bella writing down every single thought that she had regarding his absolute perfection (remember, this is a first person narrative). While spending time with "the wolves", Bella goes through some interesting growth patterns. I say interesting, because I'm not entirely certain that I followed them or that if I understood them that I agreed with them. That said, I've never been a teenage girl, and the author has been a teenage girl, so I have to bow to her experience in this. Many readers will look at Bella's behavior during her "dalliance with wolves" as bizarre and entirely unbelievable. I don't think they were. For anyone that has had the absolute love of their life torn from them, with the *absolute* belief that this love would not return, and if you happen to be emotionally immature to top all of this off, your behavior wouldn't be too far off from Bella's. I'm not saying exactly like Bella's, just not too far off. Again, this is not a vampire story. The fact that vampires were not around in this book as often as some may have liked did not lessen the quality of the story. What was missing, though, was the urgency, and the mystery. For example, we never knew why, in Twilight, Edward recoiled upon first seeing Bella until the very end. We had a reaction, and a resolution, and during that time we had lots of questions. That type of immediacy was missing here. Everything was rather straightforward. When Edward lies to Bella, we know that he is lying, and we know that there will be resolution. The problem is that we know he's lying, and we know the resolution won't be too surprising. I did enjoy the unique take on werewolves, but I felt that since we had seen so much of the vampires in the first book, that we should have seen and felt more of the werewolves in this book. One thing that I found particularly frustrating was the similarity of emotion that both Jake and Edward have for Bella. Yes, Bella is a clutz, and she definitely needs protecting. But to have two main characters, in two separate books, respond to her in a nearly identical manner (both fearing for, and being vocal about, her need to be less careless), is tough to buy. There were some hints of future issues between the Cullens and Jake's clan. I hope we see them. And I hope that this story can survive the necessary metamorphosisRead full review
When the unnamed vampire intruder entered Bella’s home and searched through her room, the errant vampire stole more than Bella’s belongings; her tenuous sense of security was also shattered. Unable to deal with the loss of her friendship with Jacob, Bella breaks all the rules to repair the relationship. The realization that her loyalties and her love were torn caused Bella to face the scariest monster yet: her own feelings of who truly held her heart. All in all, this book was much better than the second book in the series, being reminiscent in writing to the first book in the series, Twighlight. The characters are written in a three dimensional format where you can feel empathy and understanding for their indecision and actions. You KNOW them. And, that my friends, makes all the difference!Read full review
At 39, I thought I had moved on to more "in depth" novels---that's until my daughter brought home the Twilite Series. I started reading shamelessly like I was 17 again! I enjoyed all the books, but out of all of them (so far!) Eclipse was the most satisfying. These books bring to life a genre that has been beaten with a stick---and it comes out looking like a rose. Eclipse is exciting, and leaves you wanting more. I for one, am impatiently waiting for the next book in the series. While I'm waiting, you need to buy this book. It takes you into a dream-like world, with well fleshed-out characters that draw you in tightly. It's a tightly-crafted book of depth and character---and best of all, it's rollicking good fun!
Since I wanted to read Twilight before I saw the movie, I decided that I might as well read the entire series!! Again, this was an easy read (still at home sick in bed) and I finished in 1 day. I wanted it to go on and on. Good for Edward being old fashioned. It was interesting to hear the Cullen family stories of back when they were human (Oh Rosalie). I love any stories about vampires and love the romance in this. It makes me want to be a teenager again and maybe a vampire as well? Read it to become closer to your own daughter, it would make for some great conversation!
this is the third book in this series and by FAR the BEST~ Bella Swan is caught between 2 'very' attractive males~ Edward a Vampire and Jacob a Werewolf~ it "bites" LOL~ when a mystery involving all three in a series of killings in Seattle we are swept up in the Mystery of the TRIO~ Young People's Book but any one who likes a good vampire tale will also enjoy~ well written and keeps up a good Pace~ solid fun read~~ I give this a solid 8 out of 10 for great follow up story in this Trilogy by this author~ if you found this review helpful please remember to vote~
You haven't experienced the true greatness of the twilight series until you have read Eclipse. this as so much excitement in it you can hardly believe. here I will tell you a little summary so you know what I meen. Edward is back with Bella to stay, but there are a few choices she must make. Well in the book new moon you know how Bella became friends with Jacob well they are more then just friends in the 3rd book they end up falling in love. In the 3rd book Bella has a problem with the Volturi the problem is no human is to know about vampires and 2nd the Volturi thinks its interesting that that Edward and themselves cant read Bella's mind. The problem is she has to become a vampire or die! Bella also has one more decision to make between Edward and Jacob. She has asked Edward if he will be the one to turn her into a vampire. He says yes on one condition she has to marry him first. There is one more problem to face in forks that will make the werewolves and the vampires unite as one. You rember Victoria right. Well she wants revenge on Bella because Edward killed James. Victoria is starting an army of newly born vampires that she is going release in to Forks. What do you think bella will choose life or death, but which is which, and will she choose Edward or jacob? you will have to read it to see what Bella's choices are and if Forks is going to find out the secret of the wolves and vampires.Read full review
I decided to purchase this book because my teenage daughter and neices read them and said they were really good. They range in age from 15 - 18 years old. I also saw the Movie 'Twighlight' (book #1). I have to say the book is much better than the movie. Since I read the first two books I thought I'd better finish the series. They are more geared towards teenage readers, but is a good easy read for adults too. Who doesn't like a good love story...even if it involves vampires and warewolves.
This is by far my favorite book! I had to force myself to put it down to take care of my house. I think my roof could have blown away and I would have stayed in my chair reading. This is her best book yet. Many of the previous conflicts are wrapped up in this book, but new conflicts are brought about to continue the series. I think anyone would enjoy this book. And unlike many good books these days, the language is clean too. This is even something I'd let my kids read when they're a little older.
It will be intriguing to see where Stephenie Meyer takes the ideas and characters in this series next. Writing for the Young Adult market always means that there is some expectation for the author to set a good example for impressionable young minds yet criticisms that Bella’s character is too dependent and needs to set a better example for young women seem unfair. This is romantic fantasy – enjoy it!
