Synopsis
"Ideal if you need some inspiration for your sailing destination bucket list. It features stunning photos and history and includes travel tips. Champion racers and celebrated adventurers share their favorite must-see sailing spots." --YachtWorld Author Chris Santella has assembled a crew of the world's greatest championship racers and professional adventurers and persuades them to disclose their favorite destinations around the globe. Featuring some of the best-known men and women in the sport--Tom Whidden and Gary Jobson (members of the winning 1987 America's Cup crew), Jeff Johnstone (of J-Boats), award-winning sailing writer Lin Pardey, and many others--this is a unique full-color celebration for sailors to relive their greatest memories or plan their next big adventure. The amazingly diverse places they've selected include: Australia: Fremantle and Sydney Bermuda: St. George's Harbor Brazil: Bay of Ilha Grande California: Channel Islands and San Francisco Bay Chile: Cape Horn Hawaii: Lahaina to Honolulu Italy: Costa Smeralda, Sardinia Maine: Boothbay Harbor, Penobscot Bay, Southwest Harbor Florida: Biscayne Bay and Key West Scotland: Firth of Clyde South Africa: Cape Town And dozens more! For each of the 50 places, the sailor recommending the venue spins an entertaining yarn about their experience there, and each description is accompanied by a "make you want to go there now" photograph. Santella writes in his introduction, "From the relative indolence of cruising the Dodecanese or the British Virgin Islands, to the white-knuckle adventure of rounding Cape Horn, to the thrill of partaking in the regatta off Newport, Fifty Places to Sail Before you Die attempts to capture the rich and varied world of recreational sailing. It's my hope that it will inspire you to set sail on some new adventures of your own." This is the perfect book for a sailor to get as a gift or to buy for themselves!, Mankind has plied the waves of the ocean since the dawn of recorded time, seeking sustenance, riches and adventure. This book maps out some of the world's great sailing venues, as shared by champion racers and celebrated adventurers. The venues range from ports like Newport to the passage around Cape Horn to idyllic island retreats like Mopelia., Landlubbers joke that sailors are always wanting to head off to the ends of the earth, but Chris Santella takes that life-changing desire very seriously. In this, the third installment in his immensely successful Fifty Places series, Santella assembles a crew of the worlds greatest championship racers and professional adventurers and persuades them to disclose their favorite destinations around the globe. Interviewees include some of the best-known men and women in the sport: Tom Whidden and Gary Jobson (members of the winning 1987 Americas Cup crew), Jeff Johnstone (of J-Boats), award-winning sailing writer Lin Pardy, and many others. The amazingly diverse places theyve selected range from clubby East Coast ports (Marblehead, Annapolis), to idyllic tropical refuges (Ilha Grande, Brazil; the Polynesian atoll of Mopelia), to some of the most hair-raisingly treacherous waters on earth (Cape Horn). Coastlines around the worldeven Antarctica and the Arcticare represented, and the chosen spots include some spectacular inland waters, such as the Bras dOr Lakes and the North Channel of Lake Huron. For each of the 50 places, the sailor recommending the venue spins an entertaining yarn about his or her experience there, and each description is accompanied by a "make you want to go there now" photograph., Author Chris Santella has assembled a crew of the world's greatest championship racers and professional adventurers and persuades them to disclose their favorite destinations around the globe. Item as described, good price, well packaged, arrived slightly later than hoped (not in time for Christmas ) but the order was placed in a very busy shipping period. No issue with the seller’s speed of response and sending the item. Great seller!

The seller is one of the best there is - high quality books, reasonable prices, securely packaged. I do, however, recommend some changes to their shipping - they show a shipper (SortHub) on eBay, but the tracking # they email is for a different carrier. It’s difficult to know where my purchase is. This time, it was delivered a week late. In the grand scheme of things not a big deal. But it shouldn’t be this difficult to accurately track my purchase.

  • It was a gift.

I didn't read it; it was a gift to my brother who has a sailboat. He said it was an interesting book.
