The Seiko Alpinist SARB017, is a beautiful watch. It has a stunning green sunburst face which changes colour with the light, from almost black to brilliant green. The stainless steel case is predominantly polished, with subtle brushed upper surface to the lugs. The case has a wonderful organic form, which is 39mm across and 12mm thick. It hugs the wrist and looks good on smaller or large wrists. The internal bezel which enables navigation using the sun (how often people including me, will use this feature, it is a talking point, but I am sure rarely used!). The face is coveted by a sapphire crystal, making it a lot more resistant to scratches, than the normal Seiko Hardlex. Though there does not appear to be any anti reflective coating, which is disappointing. The gold cathedral hands and gold applied markers compliment the green face, making this climbers 'tool watch' capable of being used in formal settings as a dress watch, as well as with jeans and T shirt. The only feature that lets the watch down is the cheap, plasticy, supplied strap, which has now been replaced by me with a better quality brown leather strap and deployment clasp. The movement is an automatic 6R15 which gives 50 hours reserve. It has diashock shock resistance, hacking and manual wind. If regulated it can provide a reliable, resilient and accurate time piece. This model has now been discontinued, being replaced by the Prospex SBDC091. This has many features that could be seen as an improvement, but it is significantly more expensive. This older SARB017 has scratched my Alpinist itch and I am more than happy with this recent purchase. An unhealthy case knock was found to be a loose rotor, After a quick tightening of the rotor screw, the fault was fixed and I was a happy shopper once again. If you can get a reasonably priced SARB017 Alpinist, I would recommend this classic Seiko all day long. Read full review

Much nicer in the metal than on YouTube. Very comfortable, & more subtle than in pictures. Yes the standard strap really is awful, but a submariner (or one of its many copies) bracelet fits the case. Stunning finish, accurate movement (+3 per day so far) & built like a tank. Typical Seiko lume lasts all night (tho obviously not as much applied as on a diver) & spot on size. Now the inflated prices are dying down to a reasonable level they're well worth buying as a keeper. Not out classed by my much pricier swiss watches! Highly recommended 👍👍

A wonderful classic watch that punches well above its weight for value and style. The beautiful green sunburst dial and gold applied indices are amazing on such a perfectly sized and finished case. The polishing is amazing and looks a million dollars when paired with a Stapcode Angus Jubilee bracelet. Given it is now discontinued I can only see price and desirability going up.
