Synopsis
"I wish I could fold Patrick Smith and put him in my suitcase."--Stephan Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics For millions of people, travel by air is a confounding, uncomfortable, and even fearful experience. Patrick Smith, airline pilot and author of the webs popular Ask the Pilot feature, separates the fact from fallacy and tells you everything you need to know... -How planes fly, and a revealing look at the men and women who fly them -Straight talk on turbulence, pilot training, and safety -The real story on congestion, delays, and the dysfunction of the modern airport -The myths and misconceptions of cabin air and cockpit automation -Terrorism in perspective, and a provocative look at security -Airfares, seating woes, and the pitfalls of airline customer service -The colors and cultures of the airlines we love to hate Cockpit Confidential covers not only the nuts and bolts of flying, but also the grand theater of air travel, from airport architecture to inflight service to the excitement of travel abroad. Its a thoughtful, funny, at times deeply personal look into the strange and misunderstood world of commercial flying. Refreshing and vastly expanding from the original Ask the Pilot. "Patrick Smith is extraordinarily knowledgeable about modern aviation...the ideal seatmate, a companion, writer, and explorer."--Alex Beam, Boston Globe "Anyone remotely afraid of flying should read this book, as should anyone who appreciates good writing and great information."--New York Times, on Ask the Pilot, Weaves the parallel stories of two Mexican-American families and two countries. Describes the volatile bootlegger who would become the author's father and the beautiful Lupe, his mother.

  • Rain of Gold - Llvia de Oro

What Victor Villasenor has written about is a very important part of history affecting the U.S.A. - the Southwest in particular and Mexico to this day and is something that should be read by all serious history buffs and in particular anyone whose family migrated from Mexico. Our past history is what affects us today. A good history student knows that history is written by individuals with different view points, and often an axe to grind. I believe that Villasenor has hit the nail on the head with this book - Rain of Gold!

Some years ago, I borrowed and read this book. It was good enough to purchase it for my daughter (20+ yo) and read it again myself. I plan to keep it in our house for others to read or borrow it as well.

  • Great story based on historical fact

I liked that this story followed two families, both from similar areas in Mexico, and what they had to do to survive. This was a really great read,
