Although the letters home have some family commentary, there is a lot of the author's experience with wounded and ill solders. He is a Medical Doctor and provides some detail about the treatment of the solders both Union and Confederate. This reader would have enjoyed even more treatment details. It is fascinating reading that goes very quickly. The editor's forward is detailed and interesting. It sets the historical frame work for the letters in an interesting and informative manner.
