I bought this book for my father's birthday but I am going to have to buy a copy for myself as I love it so much. It is absolutely wonderful. Matthew Rice has an exceptional talent for producing architectural drawings that are warm and endearing, instead of the clinical drawings you usually find when someone produces a technical drawing. The book is somewhat akin to a picture dictionary, in that it takes you through the vocabulary of various aspects of church design (outside and in), as it has evolved over the centuries. I had to do a project on a medieval church for GCSE history, many moons ago, and had to learn how to spot such items as the piscina and sedilia. So I was delighted to find them on p71, drawn beautifully. If only this book had existed back in the late eighties! Half of my class would have bought copies of this book! Since having done my history project and I have always enjoyed taking a look inside churches and this is just the right kind of book to enable people to look around the exterior and interior of churches and to spot particular features with a more knowing eye. If you like popping into churches when you pass them on country walks or in towns and villages you are visiting then this is the book for you.
