This volume is a highly readable account of the life of SS General Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most chilling and loathsome figures of the Third Reich, and of his 1942 assassination, in Prague, by Czech partisans. Written by an academic, the book nonetheless reads like the best thrillers. Heydrich, a cashiered naval officer, found his true calling as Heinrich Himmler's right-hand man. Recruited by Himmler to create a security service within the SS, Heydrich was instrumental in morphing the SS from a mere "praetorian guard" for Hitler to a police organization with tentacles reaching every corner of Germany and the nations it overran. He chaired the notorious Wansee Conference, at which the "Final Solution to The Jewish Question" was planned, and he directed the equally notorious ... His talents did not go unnoticed by his Fuehrer, who tapped him to become Acting Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia (Czechoslovakia), a post Heydrich eagerly sought as an opportunity to showcase how the occupied territories could be pacified and made into docile centers of war production under SS rule. He was singularly successful in this job, using a ruthless "stick and carrot" approach to keep the public cowed and the Skoda arms factory humming. Heydrich's success caused panic in London, where the Benes government-in-exile sought to convince both Britain and Moscow that the Czechs were true partners in the war against Germany. Benes had teams of exiled Czech commandos trained to parachute into their homeland, setting up radio links and performing acts of sabotage. One of the teams was charged with a virtual suicide mission: the assassination of Heydrich. "Operation Anthropoid," as it was dubbed, almost failed. Heydrich was driven each day from his home in the suburbs to his headquarters in Prague by his SS driver in an open Mercedes. Convinced that no Czech would have the suicidal nerve to make an attempt on his life, he always travelled without an escort. Most of the drive took place at speed, but a hairpin turn on the route required the driver to slow down, and it was here that the assassins waited. One fired a machine pistol at Heydrich, but the gun jammed. The second attempted to lob a grenade into the back seat, but it missed and exploded next to the car. But that was enough to send bodywork and upholstery shards into Heydrich's back, piercing several organs including the spleen. Despite quick action by surgeons, sepsis set in and Heydrich died at the age of 38. The Third Reich reacted to the assassination with a virtual orgy of revenge. While Heydrich's body lay in state at Hradcany Castle, thousands of Czechs were killed, including the assassins and the entire village of Lidice. Benes and his government-in-exile were sickened by the limitlessness of Hitler's vengeance, and Benes tried to distance himself from the assassination. Ultimately, Heydrich's successor, Karl Hermann Frank, continued his old boss's policies with equal success. But the termination of Heydrich's murderous, conscienceless career may ultimately have saved more lives than it cost. After all, Hitler himself said at Heydrich's Berlin funeral, "Heydrich - he had a heart of iron." But I think SS General Josef "Sepp" Dietrich, no softy himself, said it better: "Thank God that sow's gone to the butcher."

On 27 September 1941 Heydrich was appointed acting Reichsprotektor in the Czech puppet state called the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. He replaced Konstantin von Neurath whom Hitler considered ineffective (but who remained titular protector until 20 August 1943). The Protectorate was a vital weapons and war material producer for the Third Reich at the time. Heydrich came to Prague to restore production quotas. As the governor of Bohemia and Moravia for Hitler, Heydrich became brutal. He punished many who did not produce up to the quotas demanded. Anyone associated with ... Under Heydrich, Prague and the rest of the Czech lands became quite pacified because of the harshness of the Nazi rule. Because of his success in Prague, Hitler was considering making Heydrich the governor of Paris. When British intelligence heard this, they wanted to stop this at all costs. They would not let a man who butchered the Czechs and Jews of Prague to do the same to the French Resistance. While virtual military governor of Bohemia and Moravia, exercising real executive power above the Czech President and Prime Minister, Heydrich often drove alone in a car with an open roof — a show of confidence in the occupation forces and the effectiveness of his government (See Czech resistance to Nazi occupation). Jan Kubiš and Jozef Gabčík were Czechoslovak partisans who had fled the country earlier in 1941. After receiving training from the British they parachuted back into the region that December and on May 27, 1942 ambushed Heydrich while he rode in his open car in the Prague suburb of Kobylisy. As the car slowed to take a hairpin bend in the road, Gabčík drew a concealed British-made Sten sub-machine gun but it failed to fire, so Kubiš threw a bomb near the rear of the car which wounded Heydrich and Kubiš himself. The reason why the Sten failed is open to speculation, although the type was prone to jamming and stoppages, due to the design of the single column 32-round magazine and poor quality control among some of the myriad small workshops producing Sten gun magazines. Most of these possessed no prewar experience in the manufacture of firearms parts. Heydrich appeared not to be injured very seriously. He gave chase and tried to return fire but his pistol was not loaded. However, after running some distance, he became weak from shock, and sent his driver Klein off on foot to chase the escaping Gabčík, but he, in the ensuing fire-fight was shot in the leg by Gabčík. He would be the only head Nazi that would be targeted for assassination by the Allies during the war. Despite Himmler sending his best doctors, Heydrich died in agony in a Prague hospital at the age of 38. Lina Heydrich later stated that she believed Heydrich had expected an early death, saying that she saw his frequent unnecessary risk-taking (such as his recklessness in his Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109) as an attempt to ensure that, should he die, his would be a dramatic death.
