    This was the only successful assassination of a leading Nazi during World War II, which brought ferocius reprisals against Czech and Jews precisely because it cut so deeply into the image of Nazi invulnerability. On 27 September 1941 Heydrich was appointed acting Reichsprotektor in the Czech puppet state called the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. He replaced Konstantin von Neurath whom Hitler considered ineffective (but who remained titular protector until 20 August 1943). The Protectorate was a vital weapons and war material producer for the Third Reich at the time. Heydrich came to Prague to restore production quotas.
