The 2nd Flavia deLuce detective novel. She is an 11 year old, not always nice, child. But how amazing & funny. I shouldn't like some of the sneaky thins she does, but I wish I had been that brave when I was 11/

Flavia de Luce is my new favorite heroine. She is smart and observant. Because she is eleven she is invisible to the adult population of Bishops Lacey. She has entree into every drawing room and goes unoticed as she picks up clues while sleuthing. She is unfazed by death and is an expert on poisons. Chemistry is her passion thanks to the laboratory and books of a long deceased uncle. While Flavia is the star of this story there is a cast of characters that Dickens would be proud of. From the victims of the crime to her eccentric family members, no one disappoints. This book does not suffer in comparison to "Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie". I loved them both. Alan Bradley has created a character that I hope will be solving crimes well into the future.
Great value and very good read.

Mystery with a surprising and totally unique heroine.

Alan Bradley does a great job of conveying historically accurate descriptions of places and things that adds to the intrigue of the murder investigation.

Alan Bradley is just cranking out the books and this one is not nearly as good as his first Flavia de Luce mystery. His formula just isn't working any more.
