The Thorn Birds is a chronicle of three generations of Clearys--an indomitable clan of ranchers carving lives from a beautiful, hard land while contending with the bitterness, frailty, and secrets that penetrate their family. It is a poignant love story, a powerful epic of struggle and sacrifice, a celebration of individuality and spirit. Most of all, it is the story of the Clearys' only daughter, Meggie, and the haunted priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart--and the intense joining of two hearts and souls over a lifetime, a relationship that dangerously oversteps sacred boundaries of ethics and dogma. "A heart-rending epic...truly marvelous." --Chicago Tribune

      Heavy reading, but worth it.

I bought the book because I couldn't find it in my local library. This is the third time I've read this book over a 40 year period. I have this love/hate feeling every time I read it due to the ending. Even though I am a Catholic, I can look at my Church with an objective view.

    • Top critical review

      The Thorn Birds

The paperback was so darkened from age and some sort of page corrosion that I just trashed it. Too late for photos. I tossed it immediately. Please note that this review is in no way a criticism of the author or her work.

    • Can't ever say to much good things about this book

It doesn't matter what the cover looks like "all" The Thorn Birds books are the same. FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you loved the movie you must read the book. There are several things in the book that isn't in the movie. It'll hold your attention from page 1 all the way through to the end. The book starts with the Cleary's. It's Meggie's 4th birthday and she gets her first doll only for 2 of her brothers to take it away from her and almost destroy it. They are a poor family and Paddy does all he can so that his family has the basics that are needed. Then he hears from his sister Mary. She is very rich and owns the #1 sheep station in Australia along with other holdings. She wants Paddy to come to Australia and help run the sheep station. So Paddy packs up his family and moves to ...
