    • Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

Not many realize that Keyes originally published a shorter version of this story in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. I believe his main character Charlie is the quintessential human. Stupid. By miracle, genius strikes, then stupid returns. That sums up our experience here on Earth, however, I digress. Charlie is still stupid when he is a genius--he gets drunk on several occasions and is promiscuous, and to beat it all, falls in love--so though he becomes extremely intelligent, he is still very much flawed. A very good read. I first read this in the 1960's, and still enjoyed reading it again. A timeless classic.

    • Buy it and enjoy owning a classic.

An absolute classic. Keyes goes beyond a simple story by using the protagonist Charly, to explore the complex world of neuroscience and the consequences intelligence has on an individuals life. Regardless of the type of literature you prefer, this should be a book on your shelf.

I bought this book for a gift for someone. I read the book in college and as a younger person. I wanted the person I bought it for to read the book because we talked about the content so often, I felt she would really find the Mice(Algernon) and Charley unique charagers.
