About this product

Product Information

Now in paperback, the national bestselling riches-to-rags true story of an advertising executive who had it all, then lost it all--and was finally redeemed by his new job, and his twenty-eight-year-old boss, at Starbucks . In his fifties, Michael Gates Gill had it all: a mansion in the suburbs, a wife and loving children, a six-figure salary, and an Ivy League education. But in a few short years, he lost his job, got divorced, and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. With no money or health insurance, he was forced to get a job at Starbucks. Having gone from power lunches to scrubbing toilets, from being served to serving, Michael was a true fish out of water. But fate brings an unexpected teacher into his life who opens his eyes to what living well really looks like. The two seem to have nothing in common: She is a young African American, the daughter of a drug addict; he is used to being the boss but reports to her now. For the first time in his life he experiences being a member of a minority trying hard to survive in a challenging new job. He learns the value of hard work and humility, as well as what it truly means to respect another person. Behind the scenes at one of America's most intriguing businesses, an inspiring friendship is born, a family begins to heal, and, thanks to his unlikely mentor, Michael Gill at last experiences a sense of self-worth and happiness he has never known before. • Not a great book but worth reading.

This book was an enjoyable read. In one sense it is the story of an upper class guy isolated from the things in life most of us have had to experience. He kind of lived in a glass bubble. Unfortunately, he had to lose everything to find the things that really matter like friendship, hard physical work, serving others, and kindness. I enjoyed the story because to me it is a witness that the words of Jesus in the Bible are true, "Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions......Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes."

  • It's all in the perspective.

This is a book about accepting the circumstances and making the most out of it. It's about learning the true values in life and that People can teach Us something that We always took for grated We thought We already knew. What's really important in life is the People Who are in Our lives, not the things in Our lives. Power,Money,Status,Pride and Vanity are stripped bare in this book and exposed for what they REALLY are....WORTHLESS! It is Our Family, Co-Workers and Friends in Our lives that are the REAL definition of Success! It reveals that no matter how long We live We are always learning and experiencing something just when We thought We had learned and experienced enough. Life is what You make of it, NOT how it's dished out to You. a Thought provoking and Inspiring read. ...

  • A Winner

I was listening to public radio who was interviewing this author. They were discussing how he had met many famous people in years past in his priviledged life and that all that took a turn with him ending up working at Starbucks. He sounded like an interesting fellow with life lessons to share so I bought the book. I enjoyed the real life people he speaks of and appreciated his revelations that touched on race, economic & social statuses, and the trepidation of having to start over. It's not a heavy read. I'm passing it along to friends. The book has nice tones to it for how treating one another with respect can make work seem rewarding.

  • It's Not About the Coffee

My wife and I listen to a lot of audiobooks, especially when we're traveling. I didn't think she'd like this book, and I wasn't sure I would. But what we discovered was Mike Gill's book isn't about coffee. It's about life, acceptance, and moving forward. And it's a book anyone who has been through job loss late in life can appreciate. It's believeable and surprisingly fast paced. The listener finds himself pulling for him to succeed, and agonizing with him when things don't go really well. There are some loose ends, however. He has a brain tumor, and it's ultimate resolution isn't disclosed. He changes stores, and how he adapts to the new store isn't revealed. But those are minor items. The book is uplifting and lives up to the title--Starbucks really did save his live.

  • WOW...AMAZING

All I can say is WOW....I have family...friends that have walked or walking in Michael's shoes....what a great story. Lesson learned here...one should never be to certain of their job...life style, etc. In the blink of a eye..it can all be gone...just like that. You think that giving a company your ALL....that they would show some respect...all you are is just an employee number....and your head on the chopping block at any given time. This book makes me want to work at Starbucks!!!!..They truly care about there "partners"....
