    It is the granddaddy of Chicano authors

    I first read this book when it was initially published in the '70s. Like most L.A. Chicanos at the time, I was full of doubts and confusion, about myself and my ethnicity. I grew up looking to John Steinbeck for validity and, while he wrote about my people as though he was one of us, he wasn't. But, Richard Vasquez was! So, this book meant the world to me. It spoke about my family, immigrants trying to keep their original roots and pride, while struggling to fit in to a society that wasn't welcoming their differences. Girls in my neighborhood were getting pregnant out-of-wedlock, and having shotgun weddings. And families were being divided as a result of the shame. Even so, our solution to the problem would never have been an abortion. So, this book made me and my friends look at ...
