About this product

Product Information

Irving Stone's classic biographical novel of Michelangelo--the #1 New York Times bestseller in which both the artist and the man are brought to vivid, captivating life. His time--the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring Popes, and the all-powerful de'Medici family... His loves--the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de'Medici, the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi, and his last love, his greatest love--the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna... His genius--a God-driven fury from which he wrested brilliant work that made a grasp for heaven unmatched in half a millennium... His name--Michelangelo Buonarroti. Creator of the David, painter of the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, architect of the dome of St. Peter's, Michelangelo lives once more in the tempestuous, powerful pages of Irving Stone's towering triumph. A masterpiece in its own right, this biographical novel offers a compelling portrait of one of the greatest artists the world has ever known.

The trials of trying to paint a cathedral ceiling

I gave this to my teen granddaughter who has an interest in the Medici family. I remember reading it when i was her age, and I was so enthralled, I read the entire 700+ page book in about three days. I hope she finds it as fascinating.

  • Historical novel

I was not at good with history as a child. Absolutely love historical novels. Have gained a lot of appreciation about it from these types of novels. Ex. Who were Michelangelo's competitors, friends, etc. Did he marry? Commissions, never realized how many were forced. Leonardo di Vinci..their relationship. How they viewed each other, etc. I realize it is a novel but for me the insight, in a way that doesn't put me to sleep, is intriguing. I really enjoyed this book.

  • Wonderful writing by a master author

I just finished re-reading the Agony and the Ecstasy, which I read over 50 years ago. It is an even better read at 77 than it was, when I read it for the 1st time, at the age of 27. I recommend it highly for anyone interested in the Arts.

  • If you have any artistic bone in your body, you need to read this!

I read this as a teenager and now am re-reading it. It is as compelling now as it was then. I can't put it down. Not only is the life of Michelangelo fleshed out with intense emotion and motivation, but it is an interesting look at the political, social, and church history of the era. It is a huge investment of time though. Small print and almost 800 pages. One of the best books I have ever read.
