Synopsis
The little house first stood in the country, but gradually the city moved closer and closer. This picture book about the changes that come to a little house is beautiful and timeless. In 1942, Virginia Lee Burton created the Little House , and since then generations of readers have been enchanted by the story of this happy home and her journey from the pleasures of nature to the bustling city, and back again., Virginia Lee Burton won the Caldecott Medal in 1943 for her memorable picture book The Little House , a poignant story of a cute country cottage that becomes engulfed by the city that grows up around it. The house has an expressive face of windows and doors, and even the feelings of a person, so she's sad when she's surrounded by the dirty, noisy city's hustle and bustle: "She missed the field of daisies / and the apple trees dancing in the moonlight." Fortunately, there's a happy ending, as the house is taken back to the country where she belongs. A classic, The little house first stood in the country, but gradually the city moved closer and closer. • The Little House vs. Progress

I loved this story as a kid, and was thrilled to find it on ebay! Perhaps it was my love of this book that prompted me to feel so strongly about historic preservation.
