Notes
Guitar Picks & Bottle Caps is my second CD. I have been playing and writing songs for a few years now and I find that my life and the people I meet give me many ideas for songs. Sometimes I talk to someone and that conversation begins the idea for a song. 'Guitar Picks & Bottle Caps' started in my laundry room. Every time I empty the dryer or washing machine I pull guitar picks and bottle caps out of the machines. Both my husband and I are guitar players so we always have picks in our pockets, in addition he likes his beer. One day I came home from work and he and his buddies had been having a jam session and I walked into the house and they said 'hey get your guitar and play', as they tried to hide all the beer bottles they had laying around the floor. Put those two ideas together and there you have it 'Guitar Picks & Bottle Caps' was written. 'Daddy Was Singer In Grandpa's Band' is based on real life. My dad was the singer for my grandpa's jazz/dance band in Northern Iowa during the 50's. They played around the area in small Iowa towns. They played the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa, which is where Buddy Holly played the night his plane went down in a Iowa corn field. Growing up I heard stories of their gigs and escapades, and I used bits and pieces for this song taking full liberty to change things as I wrote. 'This Train' is my train song. I always heard you needed a train song and a river song. My river song is on my first CD so my train song had to come next. I started to think of a train as an analogy for life and how you move forward on a track which becomes your past and the future is the track ahead. The train cars carry all your baggage and memories like passengers. Ultimately you decide the route. 'Indigo Blue' is a song about a feeling. Not just feeling blue but indigo blue. It's when time is catching up on you and you need to get some things done from that bucket list before it's too late. I got the idea for this song because a friend of mine was taking a risk and leaving what she knew to go out west and play her music. I thought about all the places and things I would like to do but probably won't and started writing this song. 'Desire And Alcohol' started as a kind of game. A friend of mine was going to California in mid January and I told him to say hello to Mr. Sun for me. His response was 'Hello Mr. Sun' great line for a song. He is a song writer too and we both decided to write a song with that line. I made mine a story about a one night stand. I believe his is a love song. 'Rusted Promises And A Bruised Heart' is the story of two people. One who desperately wants to believe her man and her man, who can't seem to stop lying to her claiming that it's no big deal when in reality it is tearing her apart. 'Two Red Chairs' is a song about being in a relationship with someone who travels. My husband and I were staying at Gruene Mansion in Gruene, Texas which is right on the Guadalupe River. The room we had overlooked the river and the porch had two big red wooden chairs. I sat out on the porch with my guitar in one of the chairs and thought about the empty chair and the line 'this old porch has two red chairs, I am in mine and yours is bare' came to me. The river, with it's turns and fast and slow parts, made me think of how a long term relationship is always changing, like a river. This song is made extra special with the viola track being performed by our daughter, Claire. 'Everybody Wants A Sunny Day' is about luck and superstitions. If you believe in it or not. Do we control our destiny or is it all luck? 'Try' is about not giving up when all you can do it try to make a relationship work. That feeling of helplessness when you can't seem to get along but you still believe that the person you are with is who you are meant to be with. 'Do You Know' is simply a of fun little love song. I thought it needed a clarinet solo, so when I was recording this song I told Justin Bell, who produced the CD and pl
