I wish this series had kept on going. I found the characters to be totally true to life. Hettie is everyone's aunt with the typical values and morals of her age. She has lived a sheltered middle class life and has to come to terms of the outside world with all its faults and "sins" which are quite a shock sometimes. She deals with her investigations with Poirot-like deduction, but adds her own sometimes comical and unusual reasoning. Her partner, Geoff, grows from a troubled, wimpy and insecure teen into a man who has learned the meaning of love and family thanks to Hettie and Robert. Their adventures together are fun and exciting. If you've ever wondered what your own mother would do if she were ever put in a dangerous situation, you must watch this wonderful character and see how she deals with murder, the Mafia, corporate and law enforcement corruption, elder abuse, homelessness, juvenile delinquency, misunderstood mental health problems and discrimination...and coming to terms with her own senior status. Using detective novels as her guide, her kind heart sometimes comes in conflict with her sense of duty and you see this as she evolves from an amateur detective into a real professional. Her young assistant, Geoff, also teaches her a few things and sometimes has to put her back into the real world, reminding her about things she taught him which she seems to have forgotten in her endeavor to become a big detective. I bought the whole series and still begged for more.Read full review

A quality series from the UK. Wonderful acting, and great chemistry. Interesting, funny, and touching scripts. Good transfer, especially for a show that is about 30 years old. Most entertaining.

Patricia Routledge is one of my favorite British actresses. Whether playing the upwardly-mobile Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "Bouquet") in "Keeping Up Appearances" or the super-granny-sleuth Hetty Wainthropp in "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates," she is fun to watch. I have the complete sets of both series, and they are VERY enjoyable. I decided to purchase this DVD collection because it was about $20 cheaper than Barnes & Noble. I have purchased from this seller before and had confidence in my purchase experience.
You either like Hetty Wainthroup or you don't. I love her. The DVDs are in perfect condition and a decent price..

It was hard for me to accept Patricia Routledge in anything but "Keeping Up Appearances," but this turned out to be a delightful series with Hetty as a Lancashire housewife keen on solving crimes. Hyacinth wouldn't dirty her hands of such work so you have to forget that lovable character and place Patricia in this role of detective, who pairs up with a destitute teen(Dominic Monaghan)....who also stars in "Lost." Don't let the older woman figure fool you....Hetty carries a fully loaded handbag!
