    Great performances from a justly heralded event. This 1960 Beethoven Cycle from that year's Vienna Festival and Klempererr's and the orchestra's Royal Festival Hall Cycle of ten years later, recently issued on Blu-Ray, are magnificent companions to the conductor's great EMI (now Warner Classics) cycle. The performances are consistent with the above mentioned studio versions, with added excitement and flexibility. While learning these works as a kid growing up in the 1960s, Klemperer's recording of the 2nd Symphony on its US Angel LP issue was my introduction to the music. The strengths of that performance, recorded in 1957, are here, in 1960, expanded upon by greater tension and structural clarity and shaping.
