About this product
Product Information
The 10C Mercury dime was minted in the United States between the years of 1916 and 1945. Minted in Philadelphia, Mercury dimes were designed by Adolph A. Weinman. There were 50,130,000 total 10-cent silver Mercury dimes minted, and they are a popular collector’s item. The 1923 10C Mercury dime features two heavily detailed sides. On the obverse side of the coin, there is Lady Liberty wearing a Roman cap. On each side of the cap, there is a large wing. The lettering under the portrait says "In God We Trust," and denotes the date of minting, 1923. On the reverse side of the coin, there is a Roman column surrounded by leafy branches. The U.S. motto "E Pluribus Unum" stands next to the column. Around the top edge of the silver coin are the words "United States of America." Along the bottom edge are the words "One Dime." The 10C Mercury dime weighs 2.5 grams and has an ASW of .0723. The fineness of the silver in the coin is 0.9. The diameter of the coin is 17.8 millimeters, and it features a reeded edge that coin designers believe makes it more difficult to create counterfeits. The year 1923 was a time of economic recession in the United States but, in the coming years, the country experienced unprecedented growth. Although the Philadelphia Mint had stopped printing coins altogether in 1921, it was forced to resume minting Mercury dimes in 1923 because the existing dime stock had been completely used up. Because of the rush minting of these 10C coins, 1923 Mercury dimes are by no means a rarity. For collectors, finding a 1923 10C coin is mostly about keeping an eye open for one in great condition. These not only contain a valuable silver content but they are culturally significant due to the economic times in which they were created. Collectors and appraisers need to examine the edges of each Mercury dime closely because this is the most common place to find damage. Silver dimes minted before 1965 contain 90 percent silver, whereas their successors contain only 40 percent. However, in the proper condition, the 1923 10C Mercury dime is a nice addition to any coin collection.
