Good tool particularly for limbing and some bucking up of logs. The battery overheats and shuts down to protect itself if used for continuous bucking up logs. I now have 4 batteries which allow me to keep working for a couple hours while rotating through them. Includes going back to the ones that have cooled down. I get the impression from online resources that people have had more problems with these 40V battery packs than say the 18V units. I wanted a lighter, quieter saw to protect my body and ears, I am pleased with that aspect. The pull trigger on and off seems a lot easier and safer than my gas saws. I should mention this is likely not for professional daily heavy use. I've been using mine an hour or two at at time cleaning up debris from a heavy ice storm mostly in soft pine. I'll be surprised if it last for over 6 months. Just not built like my gas saws.Read full review

This is bad. Don't buy. Lacks power, battery runs down fast. I have a Milwaukee 16 inch chain saw that uses the 18 volt batteries, but the lower voltage batteries are not as good at delivering fast power like these higher voltage batteries, like Ryobi 40 volt this uses. So I thought this would be better and the batteries are cheaper too. The batteries were not impressive. The saw bogged down much easier in rotting pine than the Milwaukee. The second charge and use was no better. Usually batteries need a few cycles of use to reach max capacity, but it was so far off that I dont expect much better. It bogged down after three 18 inch log cuts, I was on cut 4 and it gave out mid log. I had almost sold the Milwaukee too, but decided for sure to keep it as it is far far superior to Ryobi. The Milwaukee hand drills and impacts are so similar and perform exactly as the Ryobi ones (but do wear out faster) so I was hoping same for the chain saw, but no, it was not this at all. $200 for a slightly used chain saw if anyone still wants to buy this from me. I will sell it. Read full review

Electric is strong , not for cutting entire forest (just take lots of batteries) but really has great power and with no gas or oil it’s really maintenance free. Has so many advantages and as long as it holds up will be one of my favorite Ryobi purchases

Ryobi RY40580 18" 40V Chainsaw Kit. GOOD price from eBay vendor. The Ryobi saws out of the box can show a variety of usually small problems according to internet reviews. I have had mine about two weeks - PERFECT out of the box and it has remained so. Chain oiling well adjusted (not excessive). No leaking of chain oil from the tank or oiler mechanism in use or storage. Included 5AH batt and charger perfect. Saw cuts fast! This is a great light duty saw. The chain speed is on par with gas saws and prevents chatter. - Watch out with heavy use in hot weather. The battery will overheat..If you carry some extra batteries in a cooler the saw will easily handle medium duty and occasional heavy duty cuts.

Works great very easy to use. Need a good battery for the power to cut wood. Recommended buy.

Cut through 16” hardwood tree. Was able to make wedge and through cut and still had juice to cut through another 16” log. In other words good for one tree with a little juice left over.

I was very skeptical about cordless chainsaws... but man am I glad I decided to try the Ryobo 40V Chainsaw! Amazing power, the Included 5AH Battery lasts longer than I would expect, and it came with a Rapid Charger. And the saw has all the features of a gas powered chainsaw (MORE than some gas chainsaws, actually). Well done Ryobi! Another great addition to my 40V Ryobi Tools!

This saw is better than I expected. It doesn’t have the power of my Jonsered gas saw (my Jonsered is a bigger saw). But, it is very good! It is a great value. I cut a limb about 8 inches in diameter and had no problems. I’d buy it again.

I am very impressed with this saw. Plenty of power and run time. Friends with gas-powered saws, who tried it, were also impressed. Setting it down when not needed, and merely pulling a trigger to start seemed like a safer way to work than keeping a gas-powered saw running.
