In 1939, as Hitler and Germany ran roughshod over Eastern Europe, many people escaped, including Czech pilots who joined up with the British Royal Air Force to fight the Nazis. Jan Sverák's moving war drama, DARK BLUE WORLD, details the story of one such group of Czech pilots who are at first laughed at by their British superiors until they prove themselves in the air. Ondrej Vetchy stars as Franta Sláma, the father figure to this motley group of men who desperately want to win back their country. Krystof Hádek plays Karel Vojtísek, Franta's young daredevil protegee who falls in love with an older British woman, Susan (Tara Fitzgerald), whose soldier husband is missing in action. When Franta and Susan grow close, everything threatens to erupt.Sverák, whose previous film was the Oscar-winning KOLYA, has crafted a beautiful film filled with believable, complex relationships, well-drawn characters, and plenty of finely choreographed air-battle scenes between the young, headstrong Czechs and the perfectly organized Nazis. The acting is excellent, especially the love triangle of Hádek, Vetchy, and Fitzgerald, and terrific support is provided by Oldrich Kaiser as Machaty, the piano-playing Gable look-alike. The film's politics are based on real events; when the Czech pilots who flew for the RAF returned home, they were treated as the enemy, not as heroes, and Sverák intercuts harrowing scenes from 1950 in which the pilots who survived the war are subject to jail and torture in their own land.

Well done foreign film
Once you get by having to read the subtitles it’s a good story with a somewhat typical love triangle subplot. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind reading dialogue but you miss some of the movie as you wade through that prompting (at least for me!) a second viewing. And there’s some historical information one can get from the movie that’s probably not common knowledge. I liked it very much as would most WWII movie enthusiastsOnce you get by having to read the subtitles it’s a good story with a somewhat typical love triangle subplot. The air war brought to life - buy it.
This is the movie I had in my mind before I bought the movie - If you love the supermarine spitfire and have alway wondered what it would have been like to defend England in a fighter squadron, then see this movie. This film tells the story from a most unlikely perspective, Czechoslovakian pilots who fled from their country as refugees and were trained by the British to fly fighters. Jan Sverak breaks the mold of a typical "western mindset" film about the war - WWII directly affected ALL of the eastern European nations, millions of Czechs, Slavs and Poles were killed or imprisoned. It was their war more than America's and the director uses subtitles and flashbacks from a Czech prison to tell his story of love, honor and betrayal from their point of view. The flying scenes are fantastic, ... The flying scenes are fantastic, intensely believable and the use of computer generated images are virtually seamless in many scenes, and only minimally distracting in others (such as the scenes of bomber formations). The love stories in the film are touching and believable, and serve as the nucleus for conflict between Franta and Karl, a young man barely old enough to fly. And you will never forget Franta's dog Barcha, an adorable cocker spaniel who humanizes the story, and later breaks our hearts. A stellar film, stellar performances from people you have never seen before or since, about a war we often imagine in black and white, but which comes alive when directed by Jan Sverak. Buy it and enjoy it. I've watched it over ten times now, and it's my favorite film about the air war in Europe.

WWII aviation and a well told story, a great combination.
A great movie - the story of these Czech pilots and crewmen who escaped from their own country to fly in WWII from Britain is a piece of history that needs to be remembered (same for Polish flyers, too). I think this was judged "Best Foreign Film" of 2001, and the critics were right. Very accurate and well produced battle scenes - for example, they strafe and blow up a real train, it's not a computer generated sequence. Be aware that with foreign films, you need to match the Region of the DVD to your player. This one was correct for USA. Also, it is in Czech language with subtitles. Actually that forced my 18-year-old grandson to pay close attention to the movie, no distractions or "multitasking" and so he was really into it and thought it was an excellent film. But a lot of the dialogue ... Hi everyone! eBay is an amazing source for this stuff. I am an exchange student from Czech Republic and now I am staying with a host family in the US. I wanted to show them some Czech movies but you cannot bring them from Europe because the different format of the DVDs would not let you play the movie. Therefore I went on eBay and found an amazing variety of Czech movies that are so hard to find in the US. OK, about the movie. The movie itself is a little bit like Pearl Harbor with Czech history in it. The movie will keep you interested till the very end. I watched it with my American host family. They knew pretty much nothing about Czech but they liked this movie. Therefore I recommend it to every Czech student or any American who wants to spread his knowledge about the Central Europe ... GREAT MOVIE!!!
hi! Sorry for my English I know is very bad but I can lose the opportunity to write a review about this movie, First I want to say I have 99 movie war on my collection must of the movies has spanish subtitles because I still have sometimes problems to understand English. I bough this movie with a little bit fear because the movie have not spanish subtitles anyway I WATCHED the all movie with English subtitles and I can say the story got to the start until the finish and wasn't has problems to understand, this is a great drama war movie, EXCELLENT!! POWERFUL STORY!!hi!
