Roma 1943. Pochi mesi prima del 19 Luglio, data del bombardamento di San Lorenzo. I coniugi Dario e Vicentina vivono un'esistenza difficile. La guerra in corso, la poverta, il mercato nero e in piu la convivenza con Edgardo, fratello di Dario, che soffre di una vistosa zoppia e di un leggero ritardo cognitivo.Inoltre, il ritorno a Roma del fratello di Dario ed Edgardo, Mario, dal fronte russo, accompagnato dalla giovane ebrea Lara che e in fuga da Trieste ed in cammino verso Roma per raggiungere dei suoi parenti romani. Mario e Lara si trasferiscono, per coltivare il loro amore, a casa di Dario e Vicentina. In una casa gia piccola per due, stretta per tre ed impossibile da viverci per cinque individui. Vicentina, che sopporta la nuova convivenza in virtu di uno spirito di famiglia che a lei, donna del Sud e orfana, non ha potuto vivere da bambina ma che ha sempre desiderato. In questa nuova convivenza si inserisce anche Elisa, una avvenente donna calabrese, che sembra essersi innamorata di Edgardo. In un mondo spaventato e in una Roma peggiorata dalla fame e dalla paura, Dario decide di scommettere sul futuro e comincia a realizzare, contando solo sulle sue forze, un' autorimessa.
