Why is it that the first album of nearly every group I can name is one of the best they ever produced? Perhaps it's because they pour all their best material and time into the project to break into the industry in a big way. Such is the case of the Cars fist album aptly named The Cars. Just like the first Boston or Emerson, Lake and Palmer's album, the Cars have some of their best work they ever recorded on this disc. Look at the title list, it reads like a "most played" radio list from 1978 or 79; Good Times Roll, My Best Friend's Girl, Just What I Needed, Don't Cha Stop, You're All I've Got Tonight and my two favorites, Bye Bye Love and Moving In Stereo! What a terrific album! It has that edgy punk sound that was just getting started in 1978, yet still retains some elements of the art rock movement of the 1970s. Ric Ocasek has a killer way of delivering the vocals, sometimes smooth and lyrical and other times resembling something like a machine gun, his voice having the rough edge of a two pack a day smoker. Greg Hawkes' keyboard work is thoughtful, classic and fits the music perfectly. The lead guitar licks laid down by Elliot Easton are biting, tasty, and, well, let's just say the disk is an A+ all around. It's well executed and well mixed. Give it a spin, you'll love it!Read full review
I bought this CD & when it came I looked at my copy I had already had HDCD. Looks exactly the same. The mix is different , so I guess there is a Australian Import. It's not apparent on the outside but it is in the audio mix all in all. Good vender I would have never known without it being here on eBay.

When I decided to update from my old albums and cassettes to CDs I primarily looked at the groups that I knew and loved. I have always loved the Cars New Wave sound and was very excited to obtain the 2-disk "Cars Anthology." However, although the compilation does include a remarkable six songs from the debut album a number of songs that I loved from this debut album were not included on this great 40-song compilation. Those songs included "Bye Bye Love," and "All Mixed Up." For that matter, it is hard to go without the other song, "I'm In Touch With Your World." All songs that I decided I could not do without. Haven't looked real close at the other Cars CDs to decide what I am missing from them yet, but plan on it.
This is still a great album. I loved it back in the day and it is aging well. I didn't realize this album is from '78. These guys were ahead of their time in a major way. If you are thinking about getting a "partial" album on iTunes, don't. Spend your money on the CD (or vinyl). Part of this album's magic is the flow from song to song. A partial album just doesn't cut it.
Who doesn't love The Cars? Great memories from this CD, play it time & again, over & over,!
