  • Sean is not 007

If you would like to see Sean Connery (007) in his first movie role as a dashing you man, this is the movie to watch. It's set in Ireland and based on fantasy. There is only one very scary scene when the old man who is one of the main characters meets the banshee. A banshee is an evil spirit that has terrorized Irishmen for centuries. I have met an Irishman who had such an experience, so that part is not fantasy. But, offsetting that banshee (in the movie) is a friendly leprechaun that is caught unwittingly and, according to the rules, must hand over some cash to his captor. It's a light-hearted movie you will enjoy, except for that one scary scene. So, cover your children's eyes when its about to come. Just try not to think of Sean Connery as 007..

  • A piece of my childhood

This is one of Disney's most underrated films. I used to watch it over and over as a child. I love the leprechauns, and the pooka and banshee still creep me out to this day! It's also amusing to see a young Sean Connery in a role he doesn't seem to fit all that well. He still struggles valiantly to play the part well, in spite of some weak dialogue. The music is lovely and the story well-paced. A joy to watch again after all these years.

  • Finally, Darby O'Gill is Presented in the Same Aspect Ratio As its Debut

Always a favorite, & now I own it. I love the Darby O'Gill stories; and Disney did a bang-up job making it a movie. The casting is perfect! I love Janet Munro in this - she was such a charmer. When it came out, the Headless Coachman and the Banshee scared the daylights out of me. A great film, that in its day, lost money. As did IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE & WIZARD OF OZ.

  • Great fun, especially for St. Patrick's Day.

This old 1959 Disney live action film combines quaint rural Irish settings with imaginative special effects. The dance scene in the Leprechaun king's hall is stupendous, and is alone worth the price of the DVD. Who won't believe in leprachauns after watching this movie? Some of the plot regarding replacement of the old groundskeeper with a young man may be obscure for younger children, but the pace moves right along. A bonus for adults: James Bond (Sean Connery) sings to his lady love!

  • light weight romance w/little people and good values!

Saw the movie when it came out. My daughter and I were talking about it with her children and decided to try and find a copy to show them. I am looking forward to seeing there reaction. The modern viewer may find the special effects a bit lacking and the story light but it is entertaining and contains little or nothing that anyone could call offensive.

  • Saw this as a kid...

Liked it then, liked it now, 60+ years later. A wonderful tall tale that maybe isn't so tall after all. With Disney himself showing up in the asides, it was a breath of fresh air. I seem to remember some small differences, but then it's been sixty plus years, what can I say? A pleasure to watch, a pleasure to remember the times it recalls. I'm about tired of kick a/butt-take names action anyway. This has none, it has it's own action, but you have to think through it. A wonderful picture... But then I'm part Irish a few generations back.

  • Excellent Family Entertainment

This is an excellent Disney movie, mostly comedy and just a little musical. The story and its characters are engaging from beginning to end. Darby O’Gill has an all-star cast and it is worthy of them.

  • A fun entertaining, and slightly educational movie that the whole family can watch and enjoy!

There is a lie of little things in the movie, much dealing with Irish beliefs and folklore. There is also a young Sean Connery!

  • Darby O'Gill and the little people; says it all

Simply put, it's been my favorite movie since I was a kid; humor, strikingly scary effects for the time, uplifting song and dance and quaint magical aspects. A truly joyful film with friendship and loyalty winning the day.
