Reviews
"Hernandez's The Assimilated Cuban's Guide to Quantum Santeria isfantastic and sincere, seamlessly blending science, magic andlove. Whether rescuing trickster jellyfish frozen on Mount Everest, orreattaching legs to a lover's husband via superportation, Hernandezcuts to the human heart of each story and wraps an ebo around hisreaders." --Eden Robinson, author of Monkey Beach, "There is, in fact, something quite addictive in Hernandez's writerly voice -- a combination of compassionate intelligence and weird humor that contributes to making even his most morally ambiguous and dubious characters likable." --Sabrina Vourvoulias, Al Día News, " The Assimilated Cuban's Guide to Quantum Santeria by CarlosHernandez is an exceptional collection of imaginative stories that areas captivating as they are entertaining." --Erin Underwood, editor The Grimm Future, "Mixing humour, hurt, wonder, and keen insight, this is a short fiction debut that's fierce and charming all at once and by turns." --Amal El-Mohtar, Lightspeed Magazine, "These delightful stories from Carlos Hernandez dance with a lightstep and a knowing wink, and yet that effervescent surface wraps jawdropping twists and mind-bending concepts within its boundaries.Science fiction and magical realism freely fraternize, quantumfluctuation and ritual incantations just two aspects of the same greatmystery. In these intimate stories of families rent apart and repaired, that mystery is just as likely to be encountered in a humble kitchenor a lover's bed as it is in outer space or the deepest trenches of theocean. Each story is a shimmering pond that once dived in provesbottomless. The Assimilated Cuban's Guide to Quantum Santeria is aremarkable debut, an intoxicating breath of fresh air." --Mike Allen, editor of Clockwork Phoenix , author of Unseaming ,Nebula and Shirley Jackson Award finalist, "Irreverent, ebullient, dark, hopeful, sharply funny, and achinglysensitive, Hernandez brings us a rich tapestry of Latino experience.Absolutely not to be missed." --Julia Rios, "It's not every writer who can manage to be funny, terrifying, philosophical, metaphysical, and scientific at the same time, butnarrative genre-blending is Carlos Hernandez's stock in trade. I startreading each story wondering what he's going to come up with next, and finish it having learned something about humanity and faith andalso giant pandas or ghost jellyfish. A remarkable collection." --Delia Sherman, author of Young Woman in a Garden, "Carlos Hernandez swindles you with a mixture of levity, authenticity, and sorrow that's too true to be unreal." --Charles Tan, "Hernandez's witty, insightful debut collection of 12 short stories pushes the boundaries of speculative fiction." --Publishers Weekly, starred review, "In his debut collection, Carlos Hernandez explores the ways in whichwe conform our identities to fit into worlds that would otherwise breakus. But all of his characters strive to reclaim the parts of themselvesthat could easily be thought of as lost. Funny, smart, and fierce, thesestories are a breath of fresh air in a tightly constricted world." --Christopher Barzak, author of Wonders of the Invisible World, "Carlos Hernandez treats science, culture, and genre with a bracingirreverence. The Assimilated Cuban's Guide to Quantum Santeria isa zany, kaleidoscopic whirl of a book that delivers both tantalizing'what ifs' and moments of true pathos." --Sofia Samatar, author of A Stranger in Olondria, "Hernandez's quantum-magical realist style has struck upon a potent vein, appealing to the literary minded and science fiction fans alike." --Peter Dabbene, Foreward Reviews, "For the most part, Hernandez's science isn't very serious, but his satirical targets are often dead-on." --Gary Wolfe, Chicago Tribune

Synopsis
A quirky collection of short sci-fi stories for fans of Kij Johnson and Kelly Link Assimilation is founded on surrender and being broken; this collection of short stories features people who have assimilated, but are actively trying to reclaim their lives. There is a concert pianist who defies death by uploading his soul into his piano. There is the person who draws his mother's ghost out of the bullet hole in the wall near where she was executed. Another character has a horn growing out of the center of his forehead--punishment for an affair. But he is too weak to end it, too much in love to be moral. Another story recounts a panda breeder looking for tips. And then there's a border patrol agent trying to figure out how to process undocumented visitors from another galaxy. Poignant by way of funny, and philosophical by way of grotesque, Hernandez's stories are prayers for self-sovereignty. Carlos Hernandez is the author of more than 30 works of fiction, poetry, prose, and drama. He is an associate professor at the City University of New York (CUNY), where he teaches English courses at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, and is a member of the doctoral faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is a coauthor of Abecedarium and is a game designer, currently serving as lead writer on Meriwether, a computer role playing game (CRPG) about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He lives in Queens., A quirky collection of short sci-fi stories for fans of Kij Johnson and Kelly Link Assimilation is founded on surrender and being broken; this collection of short stories features people who have assimilated, but are actively trying to reclaim their lives. - v***v (2059)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
- 2***j (113)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseI've ordered several items from this vendor now and they've always been what they were advertised as. This was no exception. Both discs were in great shape as well as their jewel cases. Delivery is good, packaging is simple but effective for what you're paying and I haven't had any get damaged. Will keep buying from this vendor because of the results so far and good prices, too.
