  • A good companion resource to Dictionary of Biblical Imagery

The product's emphasis in on the literary aspects of the biblical writings. This book is a tool that helps one to read and interpret the Bible as literature pointing out story lines, central characters, genres and styles, etc. in each biblical book. It does not have the type of explanatory notes that one will typically find in other study Bibles, like the ESV Study Bible. The literary commentary that it includes precedes each logical unit, whether it be a few paragraphs or whole chapters (rather than isolated verses). This is a book that can help one during the hermeneutical process, but it should not be used as a stand alone tool. Where this tool falls short of informing one more of the literary features of a particular biblical book, the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery by the same author would be a good resource to consult. The literary emphasis in biblical studies is a developing field, so one needs to be aware that there is always room for improvement. In addition, the ESV text is the 2007 edition and not the latest 2011. Overall, this product is a good resource for those who believe that a literary guide to the Bible will help them read and interpret the Bible. It has helped me to be aware of the literary features in each biblical book in a much more direct way. If this is not what you are aiming to be knowledgeable of, then this resource is not for you.

  • Well worth reading from and using as a real book to study from.

The authors do not offer commentary or explanations on the scripture, just on the style of writings. I wish it was available in spanish and other languages for gifts to seeking friends.
