LANC control for Sony cameras/camcorders with A/V Jack
This little device replaces the RM-VD1 Sony used to have in the lineup to remotely control camcorders with a 2.5mm "LANC" jack. Several camera generations ago, back around the time of the HC3 High definition camera, Sony began to "hide" another access point for LANC type controls in the pins of the "A/V" jack (that little "D" shaped jack). Shortly thereafter, the 2.5mm LANC jack disappeared entirely, leaving only the LANC interface hidden in the A/V jack. The RM-AV2 allows you to access that interface, as it has the "D" plug and the electronics required to make the port active for LANC commands. This little remote allows you to access the basic controls of the camera: Power on/off Record on/off Shoot a still picture Wide/Tele zoom control (2 speed, depending on how hard you press the ... This little remote allows you to access the basic controls of the camera: Power on/off Record on/off Shoot a still picture Wide/Tele zoom control (2 speed, depending on how hard you press the rocker) It's often handy to be able to control the basic functions of the camera while it's on a tripod so you don't jiggle the camera while adjusting, and this remote serves the purpose - it's also got a long enough cable that you can raise the camera on a monopod or tripod to shoot over a crowd, and still have basic control over the camera. If you use any type of stabilizer rig (shoulder mount/brackets/Fig Rig) this device is also handy to move the controls to where you can more easily access them. Just clip it to your rig close to where you grip! Operation is simple, just plug it into the cameras A/V jack, and it powers from the camera, with a couple handy indicator LEDs to tell you it's "on" and when you're recording. There's also a handy clip on the back to clip this to a tripod handle or other spot. If you need basic remote control for your Sony camcorder, check to see if the specs say it has LANC - most of them do, but it's not well documented that it's now hidden in the A/V jack - if your camera has this feature, this will be a handy accessory. PS - another good way to check is see if your camera has the LANC in the A/V jack is to see if it is compatible with a Sony Sports Pack - they also use the A/V jack to interface with camera controls when the camera is in the protective shell.
