This book is full of examples and illustrations of rocks, trees, buildings, flowers, grasses, insects, and birds. It explains the " Tao" of painting and the " chi" of the brushstroke. It has notes on the use of color. It is chock full of interesting information. Only drawback is that this incorporates three original volumes, making it quite thick and heavy even though it's a paperback. It might be handier to have it in three separate volumes, though it will nicely lie open on a table because of the weight. It is probably one of the best books on this subject, and its historical significance is inestimable, and appealing. This book should be the BASIS of any library on the subject of ink painting!

I have been studying Chinese brush painting and this book was recommended. It was written many years ago (400?) in Chinese. This is translated into English as well. It explains every stroke and reading it you’d never know it was written so long ago. So it’s just interesting to realize that people were t so different from us 400 years ago. This book is indispensable if you want to study Chinese brush painting.
