I thoroughly enjoyed this book as it cleared up some of the myths and separated it from the reality. The author told it according to the facts and stayed on track and in the process opened my eyes to the toughness of the mountain man and the toll on the human body. Even though there were times he could have embellished the character of Jim Bridger, instead, he showed some of his weaknesses and made him more human. The author did an excellent job of portraying the mountain man's life as a whole and really showed what a remarkable man Jim Bridger really was.
This is a good biography on Jim Bridger and the development of the west. Jim's interaction with the settlers and the indians is discussed in depth. The author does show some personal feelings against the indians and Mormons in the book. Other than those personal feelings he presents a fairly accurate view of the life and times of Jim Bridger.
This book brings a better understanding of the trials, myths, and the man Jim Bridger. It is a complete well rounded biography of a true pioneer. Vestal keeps the reader riveted ( I could not put the book down) by the detailed yet easily understood twists, turns, from early childhood to the end of Bridgers life. A great read for anyone who is intrigued by the history of the men who explored the Rocky Mountains and lived through the hardships it frequently handed out. The fur trade, the Indian tribes, the mormons and the grizzly bears are all in here in detailed information.
Good read so far. Inspired to read it from his appearance in Hugh Glass readings. They both were tough old goats. If you like Aston and adventure, you will like.
