About this product

Product Information

This Academy Award-winner for Best Foreign Language Film was a big art house hit, spawning a whole international subgenre, "foodie" (films about the liberating effects of good food). It's adapted from a story by Isak Dinesen about two sisters in a 19th century Calvinist settlement in Denmark who, under their late father's rigorous spiritual dictates, pass up their chances for romance and worldly success. Years pass; they grow into charitable old spinsters and one day a French war refugee, Babette (Stéphane Audran), comes to work for them. Life goes quietly one for years until one day Babette decides to prepare a lavish gourmet dinner for the elders of the town, even though the thought of such decadence makes the sisters fear for their Christian souls. This all may sound rather dull to some viewers, but rest assured, no one who has seen this film has ever regretted it. Even with its measured pacing and austere emotional palette this remains a riveting experience from the first frame to the last. The acting is marvelously naturalistic, and the cinematography evokes the dark beauty of 19th century Scandinavian paintings, rendering the ancient, white-whiskered faces of the villagers, the windswept coastline, the wood-hewn interiors, and of course the incredible food, with a vital, deeply felt reverence that lingers in the mind long after the film is over.

A great movie, and very enjoyable.

It's as good as I expected it to be, and the insert is great. I left it at a four star rating because there is a version that has a separate "Special Features" disc, that makes it even better. It does cost more, so I didn't go for that, but I am very happy with what I have. It's a great movie, and a very enjoyable one, and it's in perfect condition, so it runs smoothly from start to finish.

  • English Dub SUCKS! Watch with subtitles!

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. My only warning, and I am emphatic about this, is that the English dubbing is HORRIBLE as to content. It has changed the subtle and spiritual message of the film, turning it into a cheap pseudo-Christian "religious" movie with occasional overtones of sleeze! Hardly what it says in the original. I speak both French and Danish, and the subtitles are almost perfectly translated. Watch this film in Danish/French with English subtitles about three times with intervals of a few months between them, to let the meaning sink in. Never once, in the original script, does anyone say "Jesus" or even "merciful Lord." As a practicing Orthodox Christian myself, I was horrified when I watched the movie with English dubbing for the first time yesterday. Real ...

  • Charming movie of some relevance for today.

My wife hates art flicks. But she loved this one. This great little film is a comedy in an older sense. No knock down guffaws, no fast camera cuts, nothing like that. It is just a simple tale of love and spirituality and perseverance. The acting is quite engaging, and you'll notice that the kid who helps Babette at the end was the model for the kid in "Ratatouille." As a film about food and its effects on people, and what fellowship means, it is a truly great film. The religious content becomes the context for the lives of the people there. I saw it first way back in 1990 in Maison de Mesilla in Las Cruces, New Mexico. A good way to watch is on a quiet evening, with a glass of wine. The subtitles can be a bit distracting, and how they clash with the dubbed English leads to some ...

  • From the Vatican Review of 45 Great Films

(1988) Screen version of a story by Isak Dinesen, set in a rugged fishing village in 1871 Denmark, shows the impact of a French housekeeper (Stephane Audran) on two pious sisters who carry on their late father's work as pastor of a dwindling religious flock. Danish director Gabriel Axel's understated but finely detailed work centers on the preparation and consumption of an exquisite Gallic meal, a sensuous labor of love which has a healing effect on the austere sect and the Frenchwoman who prepared it. Subtitles. Cerebral treatment. The U.S. Catholic Conference classification is A-II -- adults and adolescents. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is G -- general audiences.
